Salisbury, Don't Live There, Still Care

I don't live in the city limits of Salisbury, but I still care how and why decisions are made by it's leaders. Why? Because people like me work, shop, eat, attend school, and visit doctors in Salisbury. Our county seat is located there, so all county business also gets done in Salisbury.

Folks living inside the city limits will say that we don't pay taxes and can't vote, so stay out of our business. Well, that's not exactly true. We pay food taxes, entertainment taxes, and so on. We also pay county taxes that partially go to paying for services used by city residences. Our County Council also has a say over some things in Salisbury. Our sheriff's office handles calls there, as well as mutual aid fire assistance. These services are paid for with our taxes.

Sometimes I wish I didn't have to go to Salisbury for anything. The crime is very high as has been discussed in previous threads. Traffic volume is high, there is nothing much to do except eat, and the people aren't generally friendly. All in all, life outside of the city is quieter, safer, healthier, and a little less stressful.

Do you think people living outside of the city limits should have a say about what goes on inside the city limits? Are we justified by the reasons I mentioned above? If you live outside the city limits, do you care about what goes on in the city? I most certainly do.

Harry Reid re-defines "voluntary"

This is one of the most ridiculous interviews I've ever seen. No matter how bad anyone thought Palin's interview was, it is a Nobel Prize winner in comparison to this gem......

Concerned Citizen Reaches Out

If there were no college in Salisbury, then what would the town really be like?

- no monkey barrel
- far less rental housing
- more property used for retail/residential
- thousands of fewer people living in town, and even fewer vehicles in town
- no collegiate sports, only HS sports and the Shorebirds

Please help me out and add to this list I'm sure I missed a few things

YOU'RE GOING TO LOVE THIS COMMENT!

Referencing my ealier Post about Salisbury University and the brawl at Monkey Barrel.

"Well I liek the fact that you pass this extremely biased man as a credible news source.

1) Salisbury University contributes over $350 million annually to the Lower Eastern Shore economy and generates the equivalent of 3,000 local jobs, according to an economic impact study recently released.
-SO howabout The City should pay the university to stay here.
-thats very nice of of us concidering Wicomico County is one of the poorest counties in the country

2) With your way of thinking, Maybe the city of Salisbury should get charged for all of the gangs going to Ocean city and starting fights. When a 400 person brawl breaks out in a nightclub in Ocean City Between 2 rival Salisbury gangs, The city of Salisbury should be charged.

3)Howabout everytime a student gets robbed at gunpoint, they charge the city for thier losses.

Here is what the rest of the world thinks about your Beloved City
http://www.homesurfer.com/crimereports/view/crime_report.cfm?state=MD&area=Salisbury

"Salisbury, Maryland is in the 100% percentile rank in the state for Violent Crime. It is in the 99% percentile rank nationally. Lower numbers are better. In this case, 100% of cities in Maryland have crime rates equal to or lower than Salisbury, or said another way, 0% of cities in Maryland have crime rates higher than Salisbury."
--NOONE WOULD LIVE HERE IF THE UNIVERSITY WAS NOT HERE
get off your high horse and thank every college student you see for making an economy here.

Yoru super credible sources fo rthis news outlet are totally wrong because Salisbury University was AWAY. AWAY. Not here, I doubt they invited the opposing team to travel back to salisbury after the ROAD victory 48-17. So who knows what else is wrong in this article.

I am not saying the fight was right, And lawbreakers should be punished. But stop bashing students, and look at how violent your own population is. Salisbury is a dangerous city to live in because students are blamed for everything and murderers walk the streets.

Your broke county and city steal our money, through police, targeting us because we have money while locals go to court for armed robbery, use public defenders dont pay thier court fees, and walk loose.

I would love to debate you."

HAVE AT IT PEOPLE.............

Wanna See the Meat & Potatoes of the Bailout?

So the President signed the bill that earlier had been rejected as too far reaching. But the bill he signed was far bigger and weightier than the original one proposed.

This is the Christmas Tree Bill...the mother of all bills. Each Congressional district Republican and Democrat got their greedy hands on this one, all at our expense.

What is even scarier is the renewals and extensions granted to the IRS and the NSA for covert operations that had expired.

What do these two organizations extended authority have to do with bailing out Wall Street?

Nothing!

This whole scenario is a sham set up to not only enslave us financially but to give the government even greater authority to spy on it's own people. The very people who pay their salaries.

Imagine a new tax preparers office that opens in town and you take your records to them to do your taxes. But it is really not a real tax preparers office, it is an IRS front company. They suggest deductions for you to take saying that there not completely sure of the legality of them, but it will save you quite a bit of money. You say yes, because you are trusting their professionalism, and next thing you know you are in jail for tax evasion!

All of this on your nickel!

Organized crime gets busted every day for having front companies as a cover to their illegal operations. For the IRS to do this is beyond comprehension!

And again I ask... What does this have to do with the Wall Street Bailout?

To see the breakdown of the Bailout go here and read it for yourselves.

8,038 Posts And Growing

This Post represents our 8,038th Post since coming to Blogger. While Salisbury News continues to grow both in daily visitors, we also continue to grow with Contributors.

The future of Salisbury News is very bright and with the opening of our main Office on the Downtown Plaza, next year you'll see a whole new format.

The plan is to have everyone register to comment so I don't have to sit around 70% of the day and moderate comments. If someone gets out of line we'll simply remove them from putting up comments and that will be final. Let me warn you now though. We're not going to accept bogus e-mail addresses and they will ALL be confirmed.

This doesn't mean you'll have to use your name when commenting. It simply means I need to break away from spending so much time moderating everything. I look forward to a new look and getting much needed breaks away from the computer 16 hours a day. This will also allow me to get out there and cover many more stories.

So here's what I'd like to know. Will YOU have a problem registering? The information will be kept within Salisbury News and not released unless someone breaks the law by making threats and so forth. Let's see what the majority has to say about this and we'll go from there.

Fernando Fight Pictures Monday

Wait till you see the series of photos that I have of the Showtime/Fernando Fight from Friday night. I plan on posting them tomorrow.

Maryland State Police Trooper 2 Funeral

"Joe, today I attended the funeral for Stephen Bunker in Suitland, Maryland. He was the pilot of Trooper 2, the State Police helicopter that crashed September 28th while transporting 2 patients to the hospital after an accident. Police agencies from around the country were in attendance, as well as over 200 of our own. Governor O'Malley, Colonel Terrance Sheridan (MSP Superintendent), Major A.J. McAndrew (Commander Aviation Command), Congressman Steny Hoyer all said a few remarks.

The ceromony was tremendous. Full honors, 21 gun salute, bag pipes, the whole nine yards. My hats off the the fine men and women of the Maryland State Police for coordinating such a large amount of people and vehicles with such precision and care. The funeral procession was over 5 miles long. The roadways were line with people of all walks, lined up to give honor to a fallen hero.

This was the third funeral in two days for the victims of the crash. I'm not sure when the fourth victim was laid to rest. Please stop to think about the sacrifices that these wonderful people give everyday for the safety and security of all of us. They have to deal with all kinds, and usually without much appreciation. I hope we can salute the fine troopers and officers from across our state and the country for doing a fine job in the wake of even harder economic times.

May God be with all the men and women in uniform who fight for our freedom, who come to our aid whether it's the fire department or the police. May he watch over them and their families and give them strength to do the very best they can. God speed.

Massive Brawl Breaks Out At Monkey Barrel

Last night there was mayhem at a local Salisbury Bar where things got completely out of control and your beloved Salisbury University was once again the center of attention.

I'm sure Monday night the Mayor will be giving out proclamations to the entire Football Team trying to settle things down but here's what happened.

It turns out, the stupid idiotic Coach of the SU Football Team allowed not only his team to go to this Bar but the opposing team as well. Dee, Dee, Deeeee!

The next thing you know, the Manager of the Bar is calling the Salisbury Police as a massive brawl broke out, DUH!

Things got so bad, ARE YOU READY, Wicomico County Sheriffs Department, Maryland State Police, Delmar, Fruitland Princess Anne and the entire squad of the Salisbury Police were called in. One Football Player punched Officer Kenny Wilson square in the head for no reason whatsoever.

At one point mace was used to calm things down and one of the girls had to be taken to the Hospital because she has asthma and had a bad reaction to the mace.

All in all there were six men and one woman arrested and sadly, although this happened last night, the arresting Officers who were supposed to get off at 3:0 AM are still at the Police Department right now as I type this because their system crashed last night and they're having to process each person by hand.

This sports crap has got to come to an end. Team Players were yelling, nothing is going to happen to us. The Coach is going to get us off on everything. Even the Coach seemed to allegedly be upset with the Police.

Fortunately no one was seriously hurt last night but to pull every single resource you have out for a SU brawl, this needs to stop and it needs to stop NOW! Perhaps the City of Salisbury needs to start charging SU for their time as well as any other Police Department having to respond to such nonsense.

Fruitland City Ballot

SBYnews Version Verses The Daily Times

SBYnews Version Verses The Daily Times
On Referendum

Several years ago (1978) Talbot County instituted a TAX CAP after a similar hugely unacceptable tax increase to Wicomico County incensed the voters to action. From 1978 until 1995 ballot questions were put before the voters to remove the TAX CAP. Finally, in January of 1995 a Coalition of SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS - Board of Education, Chamber of Commerce, PTA, NAACP, League of Women Voters, and other individuals SUED to overturn the TAX CAP and they won! The TAX CAP was ruled unconstitional.

Do you think VOICE should have gone for a TAX CAP? That certainly would have been an easy 'kneejerk' thing to do in light of the Court's decision.

After the TAX CAP was ruled unconstitutional in January 1995, The Talbot County Council in May raised the property tax by 46.%. That's right they raised the property taxes by almost 50 percent! But they - SPECIAL INTEREST - didn't have enough! The next year, in 1996 they raised it another 46.3%!!! And we - Wicomico Residents- think 23.7% is bad. Now let's try and add this up. . . .what's 46.1% and 46.3% over two years. Let's hold the math until the end of this lesson.

The Talbot voters were so incensed they searched for a way to stop these run-a-way politicos and came up with the Revenue Cap concept. The voters rallied to get it on the ballot and it was passed in 1996 by 72.21% of the voters! It stands as law today in that County. Even after MANY attempts to have it removed . . VOICE used the EXACT wording in their petition as was used in Talbot County. It's exactly the same language that is LAW in Talbot now. Six times Talbot County opponents to the LAW have tried to repeal the Revenue Cap and on all six occasions the voters have overwhelmingly continued to support the ballot initiative almost by the same percentage as when it was originally enacted (+/- 70%).

So what have we learned today. Hopefully we've learned that from the time a TAX CAP was ruled unconstitutional and was replaced by a REVENUE CAP in Talbot County (1995 - 1996) - property taxes went up 92.4%!!! Actually that would not be entirely accurate as I'm told that before the REVENUE CAP could become law the actual true tax increase was 113.8%

The next question is a bit more subjective - after this current events history lesson - is the Daily Times staunch reason for objecting to the REVENUE CAP . . . do you now feel the VOICE proposals are obviously not well thought out?"

If your property tax increased by 113.8%, would the difference be greater or less than your recent pay raise?

Salisbury Just Isn't Safe

"Hi Joe,

Can you please help get the word out..... Last year, someone attempted to break in my house. I called the cops and they told me they could not do anything about it & not to worry that it was prob. a drunk college kid that busted out my window and tried to get through my front door?! Yesterday, my neighbor informed me that approx. a week ago, she was awaken when she heard noise outside of her window. She then realized that someone was trying to pull out her air unit. She called the cops and they told her there was nothing they could do about it. Outside of her window she found baggies of cocain. Two days ago, this same neighbor was laying in her bed when she again heard something outside of her window. This time it was a white male, maturbating if front of her window. Again, she called the cops and AGAIN she gets the same answer. What can we do to protect ourselves if the cops can't do anything??

LOCK YOUR DOORS!! Salisbury is not a safe place!"
