'Uh-Oh They're Here'

A persistent blogger annoys police -- and winds up in jail.

A 34-YEAR-OLD woman
, the mother of a 12-year-old girl, has been locked up in a Virginia jail for three weeks and could remain there for at least another month. Her crime? Blogging about the police.

Elisha Strom, who appears unable to make the $750 bail, was arrested outside Charlottesville on July 16 when police raided her house, confiscating notebooks, computers and camera equipment. Although the Charlottesville police chief, Timothy J. Longo Sr., had previously written to Ms. Strom warning her that her blog posts were interfering with the work of a local drug enforcement task force, she was not charged with obstruction of justice or any similar offense. Rather, she was indicted on a single count of identifying a police officer with intent to harass, a felony under state law.

Bicyclist Struck With Blow Dart On Limestone Road

Location: Limestone Road, south of Ocheltree Lane, Pike Creek, Wilmington, Delaware, New Castle County

Date of Occurrence: Tuesday, August 11, 2009, at 11:00 a.m.

Suspect(s): None at this time

Resume: In one of the stranger reported cases of late, a male subject notified 911 earlier today to report being struck by a blow dart.

The 36-year-old male victim in this case advised he was riding his bicycle northbound on Route 7, south of Ocheltree Lane, when he felt a sudden and unexpected pain in his right thigh.

The victim looked down and observed a blow dart protruding from his leg. The victim removed the item and found it was approximately four inches in length. He reported that 3/4 of the dart had actually entered his body.

Being that this incident was unexpected, the victim advised he was not necessarily looking out for suspicious persons or vehicles and only remembers seeing a full size pick up truck passing him on Route 7 at the time he was injured.

The victim elected to seek treatment at his family doctor.

Anyone with information pertaining to this case is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.

Americana Hotel Update: CONDEMNED

The Americana Hotel has been condemned, shut down, closed!
All occupants have been removed from the Hotel and temporarily relocated to the Ocean City Convention Center. The Town of Ocean City Emergency Services is currently working with all occupants to find immediate housing to temporarily accommodate everyone.
The CO was found in the duct (sp?) work of the Hotel and I'm told the Town is doing an excellent job handling this emergency.

SALISBURY CITY COUNCIL DROPS DUE DILIGENCE TO BUY POLLUTED PROPERTY – WHILE THE MAYOR STAYS SILENT!

THIS POST HAS BEEN BUMPED UP BECAUSE OF NEW UPDATES BELOW.

At Monday’s meeting the Council majority (Smith, Comegys & Shields) voted to purchase for $50,000 – calling it “a gift” – property believed to be a contaminated former oil terminal without first getting what is a standard item in such a situation, a “Phase 2” environmental analysis of the property. Council members Campbell and Cohen, who were opposed to proceeding without that routine precaution, indicated that they were not against acquiring the property if it were determined to be remediable at reasonable cost. Ms. Cohen pointed out that before the City purchased the nearby site on which it built the new firehouse, it got a Phase 2 study of that land.

The common sense approach (to look before leaping) was flatly rejected by the three stooges, whose vote was accompanied by their now familiar and asinine pontification, Comegys being the leader as usual, and Shields the erstwhile buffoon with Smith’s support. Bubba accepts as accurate an appraisal that was made in the absence of information about the extent of the contamination and its effect on the value of the property. That’s brilliance by someone who has taken personal bankruptcy.

The stooges felt that no delay or demand on the seller could be made to protect the City. As usual, Ms. Shields tried to play the race card against the members who wanted to proceed in an appropriate and businesslike manner by exercising due diligence.

Ms. Cohen offered and Ms. Campbell seconded a series of amendments that were defeated by 3-2 vote. One of them – to strike the assumption by the City of the seller’s debt – would have converted the transaction to a true gift rather than a sale, and the others would have afforded various protections to the City against the risk and expense of the contamination. By his silence on the amendments as well as the resolution itself, the City Attorney, Paul Wilber, in effect, advised the City to proceed without getting the Phase 2 analysis or any real protection against the risk of a clear and present danger. The same can be said of the City Administrator, John Pick.

But the shocking aspect of the matter was the conduct of Mayor Ireton, who sat there mute as it unfolded before his very eyes, although apparently he had sent an e-mail earlier in the day stating his view of the matter.

UPDATE: A company called SALCAP LLC purchased this property in 2002 for, get this, $10,000.00. It has been reported that it took almost a year to go to settlement because of environmental issues. Nevertheless, in 2003 they had a closing on the property and the Deed was signed by Chris Mason. OK, so why is that of interest? Because Chris Mason works for Paul Wilber's Office.

At one time there was oil actually leaking from the property directly into the river. The MDE came in and spent something like $150,000.00 to put equipment onto the property to absorb the oil in the ground.

Now, since it's an actual purchase by the City, it would have to be done by an ordinance and NOT a resolution, as proposed last night.

On another note referencing this matter, did Mayor Ireton give Paul Wilber permission to give an "opinion" to the Daily Times?

OCEAN CITY HOTEL EVACUATED DUE TO HIGH LEVELS OF CARBON MONOXIDE

Google Provides Peek Into New Search Engine

Company says 'Caffeine' will be faster, more accurate, more comprehensive

NEW YORK— Google has lifted the lid on a new version of its search engine, allowing users to look at the results it will generate.

The new engine, available at a separate address, looks the same as the current one but ranks results differently, which could affect businesses who rely on Google results to drive traffic.

In a blog posting late Monday, Google Inc. says the new engine, code-named "Caffeine," will be faster, more accurate and more comprehensive.

The public testing of the new engine comes two weeks after Microsoft Corp. struck a deal to replace Yahoo Inc.'s search engine, with its own Google competitor, called Bing. Yahoo Search and Bing are the second and third most popular engines after Google.

New Bone Drug Can Cut Fracture Risk In Elderly

Two studies suggest treatment works better than current medications

A first-of-its-kind osteoporosis drug lowers the risk of bone fractures as well as or better than current medicines, studies in older women and men with prostate cancer suggest.

Advisers to the Food and Drug Administration will review those studies and other data on the safety and effectiveness of Amgen Inc.'s denosumab Thursday, then recommend whether the agency should approve the genetically engineered drug.

Wall Street sees it as a potential blockbuster crucial to Amgen's future. But given the crowded market of treatments for the bone-thinning disease, doctors see its expected high cost as a big drawback.

Cardin Town Hall Meeting - We were there

Hello all Tea Party Patriots:

We attended to the Cardin Town Hall meeting last evening. Seeing our Patriots in action would have made you proud to be an American.... You must attend one of these meetings. Your Country needs your support. Time to pay your dues. See our Patriots in action for yourself.

First - Cardin sent everyone an e-mail asking us to sign up so that he could ascertain how many would be attending. No reserved seats, they were just taking numbers. The doors were scheduled to open at 6:00 - the meeting was to start at 7:00.

Second - By the time we arrived, 6:00, people were not being let in to the meeting. They had actually opened the doors at 3:30 or 4:00 to let Cardin's pro Obama Supporters in. Cardin did not have reserved seating - however he got his support people in first. But then our crowd finally got in and we outnumbered the Union goons by 6 to 1...

Third - Everyone outside (about 1,000 of us) was peaceful. ACORN was there with MEGAPHONES. ACORN people were wearing red shirts and anyone who was a part of them wore little sticky badges. The sticky badge people placed themselves among those who were protesting OBAMACARE.

Then Acorn started shouting "healthcare for everyone". Our people responded with "No to OBAMACARE". We were not timid and mixed with their crowd.

Many of us engaged them in heated, face to face, exchanges. It was wonderful, American Patriots standing up for their rights and beliefs and shouting down the ACORN opposers.. With God's Grace and the will of the American People we outnumbered them - maybe 6 to 1. There were two of the Union Paid people who came by us (we carried protest signs). They could not answer the questions we were there to ask Cardin. They kept saying that what is posted on the internet concerning OBAMACARE was false. I asked the fellow where he was getting his information - he said on the internet - DUH!

Fourth - When we made it to the top of the Art Center where the meeting was taking place, they had Security People to rope us off and literally push us back with poles. If we had been a MOB, they would have been no match for us. We were all peaceful and complied with their direction not wishing to create an incident...Since Cardin was not going to speak with us, they let us fill out questionnaire cards. They said there would be a response to them.

The young Acorn people were milling around shouting invectives and personal insults and trying to start disturbances and to intimidate US.. They could not. We beat them back at every opportunity. When ever one of us engaged in an argument with several Acorns, a score of our supports would wade in and shout down the Acorns. We fearlessly took them on and beat them at every turn..Also, when I spoke with a young man of 19 years of age, in college, paying for his own way (so he says) he really believed that less taxes will be taken out of his pay BECAUSE HE THINKS HE WON'T HAVE TO PAY SOCIAL SECURITY OR MEDICARE TAXES! What a crock!!

BEWARE, this administration is ushering in rough times for us and our children and grandchildren.

Please, your country needs your support and needs it NOW. Sign and send in those e-mail petitions. Attend our protests. This is for all of us for years to come. We have the numbers, we have the will, we must stop this Obama initiative so help us God.....

Scenes From The Americana Hotel

Salisbury News provides the first images from the Americana Hotel CO evacuation this morning in Ocean City. Yes, we're everywhere.

There were only 2 patients taken to the Hospital. Most were treated on the scene. Due to a fast response and immediate evacuation the exposure was limited to fewer cases than estimated.

Crews are still on the scene ventilating. The original call was for sick subjects. They pulled the alarm as soon as they were on site to start the evacuation.

GREAT WORK OCFD!

An Interesting Comment Worthy Of A Post

This is incredible and inexcusable -- Wilber is now spouting legal opinions to the Daily Times -- see the text, below, from today's issue:

"If Ireton chooses to veto the resolution, as implied in his e-mail conveying his opposition to the donation, it may not be as simple as not signing the agreement. Wilber said only resolutions which relate to significant action may be overridden. Recognition as significant city business is an opinion by the city attorney made on a case by case basis due to vague language in the city charter, Wilber said."

In the past his opinions were always "privileged and confidential."

AARP Gets Its Just Desserts

Elected officials aren't the only ones facing frustrated, angry crowds at health care town hall meetings.

The senior advocacy group AARP is now being severely criticized by its own members for supporting President Obama's health care reform plans. Obama has agreed to have AARP administer his plan. We have learned that AARP stands to make billions at the expense of betraying the Seniors it purports to be an advocate for.

The internal debate is heating up as lawmakers prepare to enter what could be the final stretch in writing legislation, with just one committee left to vote on it.

But just as constituents are giving their elected representatives a piece of their mind over the August recess, many, many seniors are protesting the AARP.

Duplicitous and self serving AARP gets its Just deserts.

Last week, pusillanimous AARP officials, speaking at a forum in Dallas, walked out of the meeting when several seniors challenged them with strong comments and asked critical questions.

AARP members say they are so outraged that they've taken to tearing up their membership cards and firing off heated letters to the organization's CEO.

AARP has betrayed Senior Citizens for the sake of profits as it sells out to President Obama for the sake of lucrative contracts over Health Care...

Call the Customer Service number of AARP today 1-888-687-2277 and join us in canceling your subscription to this "Judas Goat" of a company........they do not deserve our money or our support.

BREAKING NEWS: AMERICANA HOTEL IN OC EVACUATED FOR CO LEAK

The Americana Hotel on 9th Street in Ocean City is being evacuated as I draft this Post. There is a CO leak, (Carbon Monoxide) throughout the entire hotel and the readings are extremely high.

There are "many patients" are being transferred to AG. More to come. You heard it here first Folks.

UPDATE #1: Most of OC's equipment is on the scene. There are numerous people with CO exposure. Stand by crews from Worcester County and Sussex County are arriving. The evacuation is still in progress.

I'm told the OCFD & OCPD are doing a thorough job on the scene. The rest of the MSM is finally starting to arrive. LOL!

The Town had Buses on the scene for evacuees to get into because it's so hot in OC right now.

THE GREAT ILLUSION

"Now you see it,now you don't." "There are none so blind as those who will not see." I think the previous two statements best describe those folks who march in lock step with the Madam Speaker of the House of ill repute, the Majority Leader of the Band of Senate Thieves, and the Great Illusionist of the White House. When presented with pictures, videos and documents of their exalted leaders they find excuses to believe it is not real. I find it incomprehensible that after seeing the evidence, they can still claim it is all rumor and opinions.

When presented with alternatives from those with a differing view, they deny the existence or even the possibility of finding a better approach to problem solving, much less that an alternate has been offered. Capitalism has served this country well for its entire existence. Sure regulations and laws are needed to prevent abuses, but scrapping the system is not the answer. It might help if we enforced the laws currently on the books. Most people would acknowledge that our health care system can be improved, most things on earth can. There are many options that can be used to lower cost, provide care for the needy and still maintain the best health care in the world. Yet these delusional people would have us throw out the baby with the bath water.

I think Vice President Biden, strange as it seems, is telling the truth about this governments policies. "We must spend money to avoid bankruptcy." How absurd ! However, that's just Joe. Wake up, all you Kool aid drinkers, the country is worth saving from those who would demonize it.

GM Says Volt To Get 230 Miles Per Gallon In City

Would be first to break the triple-digit mileage barrier, if EPA tests concur

DETROIT
- General Motors Corp. said Tuesday its Chevrolet Volt rechargeable electric car should get 230 miles per gallon of gasoline in city driving, more than four times the mileage of the current champion, the Toyota Prius.

GM came up with the figure in early tests using draft guidelines from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for calculating the mileage of extended range electric vehicles, said Tony Posawatz, GM's vehicle line director for the Volt.

Used May Be Good, But Not Good Enough For Your University

My sister's 20 year old son is about to enter his junior year of college at East Carolina. She called me the other day to complain about the cost of his textbooks, which, last year tallied in at over $1400. And he's not in some esoteric course of study, where only a thousand of the texts are published around the world, or in a major where each of them weighs twenty-three pounds and is used forever as a reference, like medicine. He's an English Lit major, with a minor in marketing (go figure.) She said that this year is pretty much like last year. The textbook list for his courses has yet to show up on the college's website for any of his five courses, even though his schedule is posted for the next semester and has been for a month or more. The list showed up in 2008 two weeks before classes were to commence. That left him slim time to go to Amazon.com or any one of a dozen or more used book sites to get the books he needed, and he thought that he was home free. But there was a catch. Several, actually. One book, a marketing text, was required to be purchased in the 4th edition. It cost $142. The third edition (2007) would have cost about $35 online used. The difference? Nothing that a 20 cent classroom handout would have provided, which amounted to some wording and reference changes in a couple of chapters, items that didn't matter a whit to his course of study. And what else was required? An online “curriculum assistance guide”, which was an additional $30, a feature that the course didn't even use. And then there were the college's homegrown “lab manuals”, which amounted to three thirty-some-page, corner-stapled handouts. The cost for these? $16 to $24 each. And they didn't even have decent covers that would weather out a semester. Out of the three, he opened two, and still came out with a 3.8 GPA. And of the two he did use, only one survived the semester, not that it was of any use after that.
The one text that he was able to buy used at the bookstore cost him $109. Used. $109. Probably purchased by the bookstore from a used book seller that paid a student $8 for it at the end of the previous semester. Pretty good profit margin.

This is evidently a big problem nationwide. To boost sales, publishers come up with texts from year to year with hardly noticeable revisions, marketing them as new editions. Professors pretty much blindly specify to their students that the newest edition is the only one that will be accepted for the course. Authors (i.e., publishing professors) like this. Universities like this. Publishers like this. Student bookstores like it, too. Each of them make an outrageous profit on what is essentially last year's book, masquerading as a “new and improved” text.
Does it happen here? You bet it does. A few questions asked of Salisbury University students reveals that a trip to the bookstore the week classes start, which is pretty much mandated to get the “new” texts and add-ons in time (the text lists were published and online just a couple of weeks before classes began) could cost each student well over $600, in addition to lab fees and extras.
SU students report that they've brought this up to University administration on more than one occasion, and they've been promised that “something” will be done to bring textbook costs back to reasonable levels. One University of California professor tells it straight when he said, "In addition, I encourage students to order textbooks from independent, off-campus sources. The university bookstore, despite a promise accompanying a change of management to lower prices, has in fact raised them." Are local professors and university administrations as straightforward? Will bookstore prices go down? Will bogus "new editions" still be mandated in textbook lists? Will marginally useful "internet learning aids" be required? We'll see.

THIS IS THE WAY IT SHOULD BE.........

Harry Truman

Harry Truman was a different kind of President. He probably made as many important decisions regarding our nation's history as any of the other 42 Presidents. However, a measure of his greatness may rest on what he did after he left the White House.

The only asset he had when he died was the house he lived in, which was in Independence Missouri . His wife had inherited the house from her mother and other than their years in the White House, they lived their entire lives there.

When he retired from office in 1952, his income was a U.S. Army pension reported to have been $13,507.72 a year.. Congress, noting that he was paying for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an 'allowance' and, later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year..

After President Eisenhower was inaugurated, Harry and Bess drove home to Missouri by themselves. There were no Secret Service following them.

When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me. You want the office of the President, and that doesn't belong to me. It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale."

Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, "I don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise."

As president he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food.

Modern politicians have found a new level of success in cashing in on the Presidency, resulting in untold wealth. Today, many in Congress also have found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their offices. Political offices are now for sale. (sic. Illinois )

Good old Harry Truman was correct when he observed, "My choices in life were either to be a piano player in a whore house or a politician. And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference!

I say dig him up and clone him!!

No Free Lunch

The Piper Must Be Paid
by Victor Davis Hanson

I think the natural tendency of the U.S. economy to rebound from recession, coupled with the enormous inflationary forces of borrowing another $2 trillion, will result in some sort of a brief economic recovery. But almost immediately we will be hit with a number of consequences that are now rarely voiced. Likewise the new ‘reset’ button foreign policy has a similar tab to come due. What to watch for the next year:

Energy. As the global recovery begins, oil prices will again climb, maybe even skyrocket. Will Obama continue his neglect of nuclear power, clean coal, and natural gas and oil exploration, or will he revert to his campaign expediency, and suddenly call for all such sources to be tapped? Wind and solar sound fine in campaign mode, and during a recession, but should gas hit nearly $5 a gallon again, talk of “green power” most certainly will not be enough. Sadly, this is precisely the time when government should be giving incentives to develop domestic energy of every sort, from nuclear to natural gas.

Taxes. Talking about new taxes in 2009 and paying them in 2010/11 are two quite different things.

Not long ago I tried to explain to an Obama supporter that he belonged to the targeted 5%, who, as an elite taxpayer, had “made out like a bandit under Bush,” was obligated to “spread the wealth around” a bit, and should prove his patriotism by paying more. But it was a hopeless task: most well-off Obama supporters simply do not believe that their marginal tax rates are going up, that they may have to pay a health care surcharge, that the income caps of the FICA payroll tax will come off, subjecting much of their income to steep social security taxes, and that their state income tax in California is now over 10%.

In other words, a number of professionals in my state do not yet grasp that their own icon has them in the cross-hairs, and that within 2 years they will be paying perhaps 65% of their gross income to government — AND — receive no particular thanks by the rest of the population for their contribution, see no reduction in the federal deficit for the new bite out of their income, and probably be in line for future tax increases given their “wealthy” status.

So it will be quite interesting to see how the Obama elites react when they soon discover that they will have about 30-40% of their income to operate on. It is easy to talk about “higher taxes”, but so far all this is mere table chat. Wait until the real bite shows up in smaller monthly checks or larger quarterly estimates.

Interest. Interest rates to curb inflation will have to go up. But the problem is that we are going to be financing a new $2 trillion per annum deficit, on top of an expanding $11 trillion debt. It is relatively easy to do that now in times of crisis and recession by paying the Chinese or Japanese or U.S. bond holders here in the states a mere 1-2% on their treasury holdings, but what happens in recovery when we have to pay 4-5% or even 7-8% on treasury-issued debt to attract buyers?

In other words, in the good times to come we will see enormous strains on the annual budget to pay out the sort of interest needed to attract new borrowers. My larger point is that the current mega-borrowing is scarcely sustainable in a period of low energy and low interest rates, but will become intolerable when prices and interest rates skyrocket. Stocks will plummet once capital diverts to T-bill and passbook holdings that pay well over 5%. Tragically, as we come out of the recession, this was the time to be prudent, balance the budget, and pay down debt at low interest before it climbs, rather than to borrow for cap-and-trade, new education entitlements, and nationalized health care.

Race. Some of us — who read literally and carefully Dreams from My Father, and its quite disturbing declarations about race — were worried about Obama’s racial obsessions. Rev. Wright and Father Pfleger only accentuated that concern. Add in the Pennsylvania slurs, Michelle’s various rantings, “typical white person,” Eric Holder’s “cowards,” and the latest “stupidly,” and I think we see that one cannot so easily be deprogrammed from 20 years of Trinity indoctrination. The point is, however, that ever so slowly the public is starting to become wary (note the reaction in the polls to Gates-gate), that their post-racial President is, in fact, rather angry and, more importantly, for most of his life has benefited by aligning himself with those forces of racial anger.

Note also that Obama’s first impulse, not his second, or third, was to damn the police as acting “stupidly” as culpable racial profilers. The beer summit stuff was damage control that was poll-driven — and never would have been raised had the matter not become an Axelrod political problem. In other words, we learn several things from the Gates matter: 1) even on matters trite and insignificant Obama weighs in spontaneously in a fashion that reflects his racialist world view; 2) such slurs are at odds with public opinion and require remediation; 3) Obama never apologizes for his slander (Ahmadinejad or the E.U., not the Cambridge police department, receives presidential apologies).

If anything, the last racial incident only makes the next one more likely: in some sense, Obama resents the need to explain his clingers speech, to clarify what Michelle or Holder said, to explain his association with Rev. Wright, or to have some irritating staged beer event. And such forced contrition only leads to yet another racial gaffe. Meanwhile, the public is getting tired of this; each new incident is beginning to chip away at his messianic race-healing status, at just the time when his actual policy initiatives are already very unpopular and depend on his erstwhile 55+ approval ratings.

Abroad. Here is the growing general impression, fairly or not, abroad: Israel is the problem in the Middle East. Iran has legitimate interests in nuclear acquisition. Russia was not at fault in the past — only Bush was. The excesses of the American war of terror, not Islamic radicalism and terrorism, are the greater dangers in the world today. Force is off the table in dealing with North Korea or Iran. South American communists and socialists have legitimate grievances; democratic leaders in Columbia and Honduras are not really authentic statesmen, but naively parrot American positions. We care little about human rights abuses in Cuba, Iran, Syria, or Venezuela, which anyway do not approach those seen at Guantanamo. Europe, especially Britain, is a post-colonialist society, and does not represent the future of American strategic interest. Eastern Europe understandably belongs in the Russian sphere of influence; the former Soviet republics all the more so. We hope Iraq and Afghanistan make it once we withdraw, but we are not all that worried if they do not, given that our President’s Third World fides will be able to handle any thug that replaces American-fostered constitutional governments in Kabul and Baghdad.

The result is that we are in a sort of circular stand-off/shoot-out of the sort seen in Grade-B Westerns. A number of thugs are now in a larger circle, the U.S.-inspired postwar order is in the center. Each is eyeing the other, waiting to see who fires first, and what our reaction will be. For now, past deterrence scares the would-be gunslingers, who fear that if they fire on us, we will blast them away — and all those at their side with similar ideas. But soon one will get the bright idea that it is OK to pull the trigger, given the anticipated feeble response. And if that should happen, all the rest will be fanning their six-shooters in unison, and it may become a very Carteresque world again, after all. If North Korea ratchets it up with impunity, so will Iran, and then Russia or China will get bolder, and then we will see more interesting things in South America, and then perhaps in the Middle East as well. Is the world really a nice place, or rather chaotic and dangerous without the U.S.’s underappreciated role.

STATE ATTORNEY DAVIS RUARK SENDS POWERFUL MESSAGE TO CRIMINALS IN PIRKLE CASE

I attended the three day murder trial of Brianna Brinkley, one of three suspects accused of participating in the Jan 22 2009 murder of Anitra Pirkle, the 25 year old young woman who was carjacked and brutally stabbed and left in a field in Delmar to later die. I had been following this case closely so I knew state attorney Davis Ruark along with his assistant attorney Jamie Dykes would be the prosecuting attorneys. The trial was to be held on the same floor, in the same courtroom as the trial of Kenneth Alvira, one of the other convicted murderers in this case and who is now awaiting sentencing. As I entered the courtroom I made my way over to the seat by the window that I had previously occupied in the Alvira trial .It seemed to provide a sense of warmth and comfort to an otherwise cold and uncomfortable situation. Quite a few people by now had filled the courtroom including family members from both sides, news media, community members, and reporters who had been following this case closely as well.

State attorney Davis Ruark and attorney Jamie Dykes were already seated at there appointed desks in the courtroom. They were ready for battle. They were both on time, prepared and dressed in matching colored suits that seemed to signal a united front line. They were going over notes and checking paper work and making sure every 't' was crossed and every ' i ' was dotted. There was no room for error in this case. Ruark knew this was probably going to be one of the hardest cases of his career he had to prosecute. The conviction of a young "female" murder suspect. The air was thick with anticipation awaiting the entrance of the defendant who had been accused of helping cause such devastating harm and death to Anitra Pirkle. There was an eerie silence in the room and as I stared out the window I could see the hustle and bustle of people going to and fro. Cars whizzing by, people living and enjoying life as Anitra once did and never thinking of any danger that they might encounter during the course of the day.My patience was beginning to wear thin. I wanted to see this "monster". I wanted to feel anger towards her. I wanted to size her up and watch her every move. I wanted to hate her. I wanted to bask in her fear and anguish of not knowing her pending fate.

The silence was suddenly broken by the sound of the opening of a side door in which the defendant used to enter into the courtroom. The room became a buzz with whispers " there she is!!!". Was that really her ? That couldn't possibly be her. Our facial expressions were that of confusion and disbelief. We were all looking for "the monster", "the killer" "the vicious animal" "the beast" who had helped kill Anitra but instead who stood before us was a calm gentle looking young woman who was nicely dressed and her hair neatly in place. She wore tiny glasses that softly framed her face. She walked slowly and quietly to her seat which was close beside her lawyer. I was frustrated. Why didn't she look like I had imagined? Where was my sense of rage and hatred towards her? We were all counting on Ruark to help us make sense of it all. We stood as the Honorable Judge Donald C Davis took his seat on the bench. The jurors filed into the courtroom one after the other looking straight ahead and purposely trying not to make eye contact with any one in the room. It was as if they were forewarned. This was a different judge and a different jury than in the case of Kenneth Alvira but I knew that there lives would never be the same

There was once again two days of seemingly endless testimony. Anitra's mother sobbed quietly as she rocked back and forth and held her arms while listening to the evidence that was presented directly linking Brianna to the crime and eye witness testimony putting her at the scene of the crime along with Kenneth Alvira and Brittany Barkley. The juror’s faces that were filled with curiosity over a box that Ruark was holding quickly turned to sheer and utter terror when he revealed the contents of the box which contained the murder weapon. The doctor who had worked frantically on Anitra to try to save her life fought back tears as he testified that he had never seen a knife quite like that in his life and Anitra's stabbing was the worst he had seen in his career as a doctor. The jurors held their faces and wept.

On the third and final day of the trial Brianna Brinkley was called to testify on her own behalf. She walked with her head held down as she took the seat on the witness stand. There was dead silence in the courtroom and the jurors were spellbound as she testified about the events of the night of Anitra's murder. It was as if they desparately wanted to hear her say "I wasnt there" It wasnt me" "they got the wrong girl". She tried to convince the jury that she was not a participant in the actual stabbing. The jurors weren't buying it. They seemed to just want to know "why"? Whey didnt you get help? Why didn't you have mercy on this young woman? Why didn't you just take the car at this point and let Anitra go? Davis Ruark stood to give his closing arguments. He knew Brianna Brinkley was the deadliest predator of all. She was the one you would least likely to suspect. He quoted the law which he knew so very well, The jurors watched him closely and listened without even blinking or swallowing. His piercing blue eyes looking out at them. His dramatization of the events of that fateful night were riveting. This case was not only about Anitra but about the safety of this community as a whole.Am I my brothers keeper? Yes I am.It is our responsiblity to look out for and care for one another.. It doesnt matter if you are black or white ,young or old, rich or poor. fat or skinny, male or female if you are a participant in a crime you will be caught, convicted and punished to the fullest extend of the law.The jury deliberated and found Brianna Brinkley guilty of all charges including first degree murder. As the jurors left the courtroom Ruark could tell that there hearts were heavy. This was not an easy case for him or them. Two families lives had been destroyed.Brianna's sentencing date is pending.

There are wolves that roam among the sheep and lambs of our community. We as adults are the sheep and our children are our lambs.Kenneth Alvira ,Brianna Brinkley and Brittany Barkley are the deadliest kind of wolves, the kind that roam around among us in sheeps clothing.Anitra Pirkle was the sacrificial lamb that was slaughtered by these wolves. Her death uncovered these preditors and hopefully helped to spare the life of another sheep or lamb in our community.State attorney Davis Ruark successfully utilized his knowledge of the law, along with overwhelming evidence and the skills and talents of Jamie Lynn Dykes , the police dept, the sheriffs dept , the forensic dept, state troopers ,detectives ,doctors and witnesses and crime solvers to bring another criminal who lived among us to justice.

Mexican Cartels Tied To Stolen Oil Sold In U.S.

Head of Houston oil company pleads guilty to conspiracy, U.S. officials say

MEXICO CITY
- U.S. refineries bought millions of dollars worth of oil siphoned from Mexican government pipelines and smuggled across the border, the U.S. Justice Department told The Associated Press — illegal operations now led by Mexican drug cartels expanding their reach.

Criminals — mostly drug gangs — tap remote pipelines, sometimes building pipelines of their own, to siphon off hundreds of millions of dollars worth of oil each year, the Mexican oil monopoly said. At least one U.S. oil executive has pleaded guilty to conspiracy in such a deal.

What's In A Name? Well, If It's Wayne....

Chuck Shepherd is the author of News of the Weird, a blog site dedicated to... well... weird news. A classic post of Chuck's has to do with how many murderers, especially serial murderers, sport the middle name Wayne. If you're about to name your newborn male child and you have Wayne in mind for a middle name, you might want to reconsider, even if you're naming the kid after one grandfather or another. Or you can tempt the fates...
