Overhauling Health-Care System Tops Agenda At Annual Meeting Of Canada's Doctors

SASKATOON — The incoming president of the Canadian Medical Association says this country's health-care system is sick and doctors need to develop a plan to cure it.

Dr. Anne Doig says patients are getting less than optimal care and she adds that physicians from across the country - who will gather in Saskatoon on Sunday for their annual meeting - recognize that changes must be made.

"We all agree that the system is imploding, we all agree that things are more precarious than perhaps Canadians realize," Doing said in an interview with The Canadian Press.

"We know that there must be change," she said. "We're all running flat out, we're all just trying to stay ahead of the immediate day-to-day demands."

The pitch for change at the conference is to start with a presentation from Dr. Robert Ouellet, the current president of the CMA, who has said there's a critical need to make Canada's health-care system patient-centred. He will present details from his fact-finding trip to Europe in January, where he met with health groups in England, Denmark, Belgium, Netherlands and France.

Carbon Monoxide Detector Required In Ocean City

The Fire Marshal Division of the Ocean City Fire Department is reaching out to our citizens and property owners, to once again inform them of the requirements regarding Carbon Monoxide Detectors.

After two tragic carbon monoxide poisoning deaths in Ocean City in 2006, the Mayor and City Council passed Ordinance 2007-2 and Ordinance 2007-7, which require the installation of Carbon Monoxide detectors in all new single-family and multi-family dwellings and all existing single family dwellings. Multi-family dwellings were given a 24-month compliance period which expired in February of 2009.

Shortly after the expiration of this grace period, Ocean City experienced two emergency Carbon Monoxide incidents. The first at the El Capitan on 4th Street – June and the second occurred this month at the Americana Hotel on 10th Street. At both of these incidents occupants of the multi-family dwellings were exposed to and became ill from Carbon Monoxide, to the extent they were transported to the hospital and treated. In both incidents neither of these multi-family dwellings had installed Carbon Monoxide detectors as required in Ordinance 2007-2 and 2007-7.

The Fire Marshal Division cited the El Capitan $2,000 and conducted a complete life safety inspection of the entire building. The Americana Hotel was cited $10,000 and will remain closed to the public until all Carbon Monoxide producing equipment can be certified safe and installed properly, by an independent inspection agency. A complete life safety inspection has also been conducted of the entire Americana Hotel.

As a representative measure of compliance, the Fire Marshal Division is physically inspecting a three to five city block area for carbon monoxide detector requirement compliance. Based upon these results, an evaluation will be conducted to determine the need for further enforcement strategies. Buildings found in violation of the ordinances are subject to a $1,000 citation for each violation.

The Town of Ocean City and the Ocean City Fire Department urge all citizens and property owners to become familiar and comply with the requirements of the Carbon Monoxide Ordinances, and the dangers of carbon monoxide by visiting our website at http://www.town.ocean-city.md.us/firem/ or call the Fire Marshal Division at 410-289-8780.

Voodoo In Obama’s White House

Kurt Nimmo
Infowars
August 17, 2009

Kristen Atkinson, a blogger over at the Townhall website, has posted an article claiming Marian Robinson, the 72-year old first grandmother who lives at the White House, is practicing SanterĂa, otherwise known as voodoo. A close friend of Michelle Obama says the president became furious at his mother-in-law.

According to Atkinson, Marian Robinson became increasingly frustrated as her husband, Fraser Robinson, was hobbled by multiple sclerosis in the late 1980s, and turned to “Santeria in a desperate hope” to cure him. “Michelle put her foot down when she heard that her mother took her dad to ceremonies where they did spells and trances, and sacrificed animals, chickens and goats I think. But Marian was desperate and kept going anyway, even when her husband was to sick to go with her. I don’t think the president knew anything about this earlier because it was before they met. Michelle and Craig (her brother) wanted to close the book on this and never talked about it again after their father died in 1991.”

Obama Lashes Defense Establishment, Congress

PHOENIX – President Barack Obama took on both the defense establishment and freespending lawmakers on Monday, saying they were draining the nation's military budget with "exotic projects."

"If Congress sends me a defense bill loaded with a bunch of pork, I will veto it," he declared in a speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He accused members of Congress of using the Pentagon budget to protect jobs back home, including on wasteful projects he said were diverting money needed for U.S. military forces battling everything from nuclear weapons to "18th century style piracy and 21st century cyber threats."

Reader’s Digest Filing For Bankruptcy Protection

Magazine earlier told advertisers circulation declining, will cut issues

NEW YORK - The publisher of Reader's Digest, America's most popular general interest magazine, said Monday it will seek bankruptcy protection from creditors amid declining circulation, an advertising slump and large debts.

Reader's Digest Association Inc. said it has reached an agreement with a majority of secured lenders to restructure its debt. Under the plan, the lenders get ownership of the company and will erase much of the $1.6 billion they have in senior secured notes.

The monthly magazine, founded in 1922 as a collection of condensed articles from other publications, has been searching for a niche as the Internet upends the magazine industry's traditional business models.

CAC Of Wicomico County Experience TWO Rain Out Games With Shorebirds

The silent auction of the custom-made CAC helmets that will be worn by the Shorebirds will occur on Friday, August 21st?

Both the original CAC as well as the make-up CAC events were rained out. One of our biggest money-maker this year will be the helmet auction.

Wicomico County Child Advocacy Center Night

About a week ago, a shipment arrived here in the front office. In the packages were light blue helmets with yellow bills. They peeked my interest so I went over to David Bledsoe, our Inside Sales Manager, to find out more. The helmets (modeled by our Intern Tony Salerno) will be worn by all the Shorebirds on Friday, May 29th as part of the 3rd Annual Wicomico County Child Advocacy Center Night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. A silent auction will be held during the game to benefit the Advocacy Center. Really good cause and I think a pretty cool item to hang in an office or rest on a shelf in your house.

I urge all of you local Salisbury residents to come out on Friday and bid on your favorite Shorebirds helmet. Disclaimer: Tony Salerno's helmet will not be part of the auction, sorry. Thanks to Tony for modeling the helmet.

(Salisbury, MD) - The Wicomico County Child Advocacy Center, State's Attorney Davis Ruark and Your Delmarva Shorebirds have joined forces once again to hold the 3rd Annual Child Advocacy Center Night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Friday, May 29th beginning at 7:05pm. The goal of this event is to raise awareness of child abuse and neglect occurring right here in Wicomico County and to generate funds to help the CAC in their efforts to better investigate, assess, prosecute and treat children and families impacted by it.

As in years past, this season's event is anchored by a post game fireworks spectacular; however the real fireworks could begin prior to the game as friends of the CAC and State's Attorney Davis Ruark gather to "Dunk Davis for Dollars". Beginning at 6:05pm, a long list of celebrities will enter the CAC Dunk Tank where fans will have the opportunity to purchase throws in order to dunk them. All proceeds go to benefit the Child Advocacy Center. Some of the local celebrities include WMDT's Katherine Amenta and Stacy Sakai, Jim Perdue, President of First Shore Federal Savings and loan, Marty Neat, Delegate Jim Mathias and many more. Of course it wouldn't be "Dunk Davis for Dollars" if Davis himself didn't enter the tank. Just prior to the start of the game the CAC Dunk Tank will be driven onto the field for a "special" ceremony. The individual who purchased the most throws before the game, and Jim Perdue, will get their best shots to Dunk Davis in front of a packed house.

Who's The Racist?

Racism

1.a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.

2.a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.

3.hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

There are a lot of misconstrued conceptions about what a racist is. The term is used today rather liberally to mean someone who doesn’t like another race or someone because of their race. That isn’t racism. It’s either hate or fear.

Based on this, one might question who indeed are the racists in this city. There is only one person in the public eye in this city who consistently pulls the race card and attempts cast racist aspersions on others. That person, of course, is Eugenie “Shanie” Shields, the Salisbury City Council representative from District One.

Winning to maintain her council seat by a single vote in the 2009 city elections (again with the help of the Tilghman machine), Shields has been the thorn in the side of many, and an embarrassment to not only the people of her own district, but of the whole city. Grunting, smacking and making sotto voce comments through one council meeting after another, rolling her eyes, and too often and too convincingly playing the comedic yet tragic illiterate fool, Shields has taken her chosen part as an anachronistic stereotype to a new level of performance art. And when she doesn't get what she wants or has been convinced by others that she wants, those who deny her become racists.

An alleged graduate of Salisbury's all-black high school, Shields has publicly declared that she wishes that schools were still segregated by color, that black children would be better taught by “their own” people. Although a self-described advocate for “her people”, Shields early on in her political career aligned herself with the likes of Barrie Tilghman and Gary Comegys, who, with the assistance of moneyed, LLC-protected friends, have their sights set not on the uplifting of the plight of the people of some District One neighborhoods, but the altogether elimination of those neighborhoods, followed by replacement with gentrified (i.e., owned by people with money) housing and small businesses. And, not coincidentally, it's being done with the taxpayer funds, funds that could be used to remove the blight but do it to protect and improve neighborhoods and the lots of those who occupy them.

Failing to have ever put forth an original idea of her own, Shields has ridden the “I'll take the crumbs” bus for her district from Day One. She has, and many say very lazily, preferred to take the scraps and leavings by voting with the crowd after being convinced by Tilghman and her puppets that there's a light at the end of the tunnel for District One, a light that will show itself soon. The Sassafras Meadows plan is a case in point. Shields' vote to approve was based on the promise of over two hundred units of affordable housing. When all was said and done, fewer than a third of that number were still on the drawing board, with the affordability itself in question, too, as an annual income of well over $40,000 was necessary to own one of them. Her recent vote to accept a strings-attached “gift” from a Baltimore property speculator on the North Prong is also a case in point. Shields was adamant in her double (and triple) negative-containing statements regarding how the acceptance of this property would “reduce blight” on the West Side and somehow promote a sea change in what she described as a barrier between east and west. When the mayoral veto was issued, she was quick to publicly call those who thought the transaction was ill-advised racists. It makes one wonder, given that Shields' literacy is somewhat questionable, if she knows what the word really means, or if she's just blindly using it (as many have) to rile the race-baiting contingent, of which she is certainly a member.
District One wants and deserves to be represented and represented well. Shanie Shields isn't doing the job. In fact, her laziness and casual attitude toward the business of the council is part of what is making the West Side what it is: a poverty-stricken, drug-infested and crime-ridden area, one whose lesser denizens threaten the economic and social health and well-being of the entire city. Her failure to even attempt to understand or want to understand the city's charter (hasn't read it), the budget (didn't read it, but voted for it, unread), the process of grant application and research (not a clue), the inner workings of any of the city departments, the failure to attend the meetings of boards to which she, as a part of her duties, is assigned (couldn't be bothered), and her overwhelming propensity to let others make the calls and do the work but then pull her dog-eared race card out (perhaps at the urging of certain other members of council, and certainly without complaint from them) when things didn't go her way have led District One down a path of destruction, both by internal and external influences. It will be years before District One once again has its opportunity to choose a representative with good
leadership qualities, and, until then, that continued descent onto the path of destruction, partly led by a much lesser leader will continue to plague us all.

STATE OF EMERGENCY:: Illegal Immigrants Burden UMC

Hospital not reimbursed for illegal immigrants' dialysis treatments

Tethered to the dialysis machine behind her reclining chair by two tubes attached to a catheter in her chest, Marta Berrera wearily stares at nothing in particular as blood flows out of, and then back into, her body.

Every four or five days, she shows up at University Medical Center's emergency room, her failing kidneys requiring that her waste be filtered and excess fluid be removed through artificial means.

"I am so thankful to this hospital for doing this for someone who is not a citizen," she said Thursday, an interpreter translating her Spanish as she choked back tears. "Without this help, I would die and my four children would be without a mother."

Wrapped up in Berrera's expression of gratitude is a dilemma that confounds the health care professionals at the only publicly supported hospital in Las Vegas.

"Our people are really torn," said Brian Brannman, UMC's chief operating officer. "We want to take care of people who are ill. We're proud that we can save lives. But our employees are also worried about the survival of UMC. They know that the appetite of taxpayers for helping undocumented immigrants is limited."

Since April, UMC has been spending about $2 million per month providing emergency dialysis services to 80 illegal immigrants, Brannman said.

Tiger’s PGA Championship Loss Is Golf’s Gain

Not only does defeat prove Woods is human, it shows he can be even better

CHASKA, Minn.
- Perhaps there was a lesson to be learned in what took place at Hazeltine National Golf Club on Sunday, a lesson for Tiger Woods, a lesson for all of us.

Woods began the final round of the PGA Championship with a two-stroke lead. Woods with the lead on Sunday is like Kirstie Alley with cheesecake on her plate, you can bet it’s going to be put away. Woods, who had never been caught from behind during the final round of a major, started Sunday with a perfect 14-for-14 mark with the lead or a share of it after 54 holes.

Politicking At MACo Conference Is Low Key

What a difference an election cycle makes.

Four years ago, then-Democratic gubernatorial hopefuls Martin O'Malley and Doug Duncan took full advantage of the networking opportunities at the annual summer conferences in Ocean City hosted by the Maryland Municipal League and the Maryland Association of Counties. The Baltimore mayor and Montgomery County executive were accompanied by a retinue of aides as they made the rounds, as did sitting governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.(R).

This year's just-completed MACo conference was decidedly more low key.

Two candidates considering the governor's race showed up at Friday night's crab feast, the see-and-be-seen event of the conference. But Larry Hogan and George Owings spent no small part of the event chatting genially with one another, and conference-goers were hardly lining up to have their photos snapped with either.

Lowe's 2Q Profit Falls 19 Pct; Shares Fall

No. 2 home-improvement retailer Lowe's Cos. said Monday poor weather and cautious consumer spending caused sales to fall below expectations and earnings to fall 19 percent in the second quarter.

The company also plans to scale back new store openings in its next fiscal year in response to the poor economy and consumer pullback.

The weak earnings combined with a narrowed full-year profit outlook to knock shares down $2.61, or 11.4 percent, to $20.22 in premarket trading.

"Wavering consumer confidence, unseasonable weather in core markets, and restrained customer spending compared to last year's fiscal stimulus-aided results led to lower than expected sales in the second quarter," Robert A. Niblock, Lowe's chairman and CEO, said in a statement.

How To Make Hard-To-Guess Passwords

Larry Magid: One of Best Ways to Protect Online Security is With Strong Passwords that are Frequently Changed

(CBS) One of the best ways to protect your online security is to have strong passwords that you change periodically. But that's easier said than done. Coming up with hard-to-guess passwords is hard enough, but it's even harder to have separate passwords for different sites and to remember new ones after you change them.

One way to create a password that's hard to guess but easy to remember is to make up a phrase. You could type in the entire phrase (some sites let you use spaces, others don't) or you can use the initials of each word in the phrase, for instance, "IgfLESi85" for "I graduated from Lincoln Elementary School in '85." An even better one would be "MbfihswE&S" for "My best friends in high school were Eric and Steve." You get the idea--upper case numbers, letters, and symbols that are seemingly meaningless to everyone but you. Microsoft has an excellent primer on passwords and a password strength checker.

No Cash For Medical Bills? Bartering Pays

Recession revives old-fashioned exchanges for health care

GOSHEN, Ind.—
At age 15, with a baby due in October, Stephany Celis already has racked up more than $400 in medical bills for prenatal care at the Maple City Health Care Center.

Even with a steep discount on the clinic’s sliding scale for fees, the debt threatened to swamp the fragile finances of the uninsured Goshen High School student and her family, who struggle to get by on her father’s wages from a local scrap yard.

And it’s a bill that might have remained unpaid – along with the others that will follow — if not for an innovative program that allows cash-strapped patients to swap skills and services to reduce what they owe.

'Politburo' Controlling U.S. Policy

Sources say White House cadre bypassing agencies, jeopardizing security

JERUSALEM – A small group of officials working mostly from the White House are tightly controlling U.S. foreign policy, bypassing other government agencies and making decisions without employing the expertise of those agencies, according to diplomatic sources...
A senior U.S. official referred to the group as a "politburo," using the term for the executive committee of communist political parties.

A senior Middle East diplomatic source said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently apologized to a Mideast leader, explaining to him U.S. policy regarding his country is being dictated by the White House and not her agency.

The diplomatic sources all confirmed Clinton has been largely cut out from the decision-making process, as have U.S. National Security Adviser James Jones and other top figures.Read more here..

Our Ongoing Catharsis

by Victor Davis Hanson
Pajamas Media

Presidential Popularity

After just eight months, the President is at a 50/50 cross-roads in the polls. The once hope-and-change exuberance has dissipated. Such unpopularity is hardly new; what is novel is the rapidity in which a 70%+ approval rating has plummeted to 50%.

What’s Next?

The result is that Obama is increasingly at the mercy of events, rather than directing them himself. If the economy rebounds quickly, if his supporters vastly water down his cap-and-trade and health care initiatives and call such nuancing success, if energy prices stay depressed, if his administration stops the racial hectoring, if Michelle, Biden, and others are advised to smile rather than to speak, then Obama may, like Clinton in 1995, recover.

But if a recovery morphs into Carter-like stagflation with high unemployment, interest, and inflation, coupled with low growth, if Obama insists on a blood-on-the-floor flight for socialized medicine and radical energy taxes, if we get more “cowards” and “stupidly” editorializing, if Michelle gets angry and emerges with more “this is a downright mean country” sermonizing, if Biden starts talking his astrology, then we could witness a Carter or Bush meltdown in the polls—but in year one rather than four or five.

Are You Happy Now?

Last week we posted pictures of the beginning work being done with the R/R overpass on Main Street & Rt. 13 in Downtown Salisbury. This update shows the "level" black stripe dividing the two colors painted over the concrete and IMHO it looks fantastic.

They closed all west bound traffic over the weekend to complete some of the major work making this sore site now pleasing to the eye. My hat is tipped to Mayor Ireton and Code & Compliance, proving they are working to improve our Downtown. Baby steps Folks. One comment stated they'd like to see the side of the building next to the old demolished Theater painted, I agree.

The New York Times’ Resident Voodoo Statistician

Another rational liberal can’t think straight.

by Bruce S. Thornton
Front Page Magazine

The New York Times’
resident voodoo statistician, Charles Blow, is at it again, using “scientific” polling data as an excuse to indulge ideological prejudice. The poll in question profiled people regarding the current health-care debate, and Blow doesn’t like the results. Seems that 56% of Republicans are following the debate “very closely,” while only 42% of Democrats are. More galling to Blow, while 80% of Democrats support Obama’s healthcare reforms, only 47% said they had a “good understanding of the issues involved.” On the other hand, 58% of Republicans claimed a “good understanding” of the issues, and only 19% supported Obamacare.

Now, these data could be interpreted in some interesting ways. This disconnect between some Democrats’ support and their understanding of the issue might just suggest that their support is merely an uninformed, partisan reflex. And the Republican lack of support could be a consequence of their greater understanding that results from following the issue more closely.

But of course, such an obvious reading of the data doesn’t conform to liberal ideology and its bigoted view of Republicans as knuckle-dragging cavemen easily manipulated by the evil cabal of corporate hegemons, whereas Democrats are cool rationalists who base their positions on the careful study of the facts and coherent argument. So rather than deal with the challenge to his prejudices suggested by the data, Blow just takes off on a juvenile rant that adheres to the Democrats’ spin on the raucous protests greeting Democratic politicians at various town halls and other fora. You know the narrative: all these people daring to question their betters are really just Republican operatives or pliant dummies agitated by Republican internet screeds and FOX news propaganda.

Following that partisan script, Blow writes, “Not only are anti-reformists showing up, they’re terrorizing legislators with their tomfoolery when they do.” This muddled sentence reveals the irrational biases deforming Blow’s thinking. By any definition of “tomfoolery,” anyone over the age of 5 who would be “terrorized,” rather than merely, say, annoyed, by tomfoolery should never leave the house, let alone be elected to public office. Blow displays here the representative vice of most bad writers: starting a sentence in one register and then finishing it in another incompatible with the first. George Orwell identified this fault as a typical feature of bad writing, which “consists less and less of words chosen for the sake of their meaning, and more and more of phrases tacked together like the sections of a prefabricated henhouse.” Orwell linked this sort of bad prose specifically to political writing, which is used “for concealing or preventing thought,” just as Blow does by spraying the scary and distorting verbal aerosol of “terrorized” over the events he is describing.

THIS SCAM MAY TOP THAT SALISBURY MALL FIASCO!

So, you now realize that Salisbury residents got scammed by those boys from Baltimore on the Salisbury Mall “TIF” deal. Well, there’s a new player on the local scene from across the Bay named Bernard Kapiloff. His firm, SALKAP LLC, wants to sell its property on Lake Street that once was the site of the “George L. Ralph” petroleum company, to the City for $50,000. Gary Comegys says it’s a steal at that price regardless of whether it is badly contaminated. Does the fact that he has been bankrupt mean anything here?

It may have been a steal at the price ($10,000) for which the sheriff sold it to Kapiloff in 2002, but not at $50,000 today without first knowing how much it will cost to remediate the pollution. Things have changed since then: the cost of doing that work has skyrocketed, while the real estate market has tanked. But Comegys says the City can’t wait to fully evaluate the environmental situation because it might lose the property.

Does he mean to say that other buyers are lining up to get the site to redevelop? If that’s so, why not let them proceed to do so?

Comegys does say that it’s a steal because there’s an appraisal stating that it is worth $350,000. He should put that document on the City’s website so the public can judge whether the appraiser really knows the situation. What if the value is based on the price paid during the boom period several years ago for the site on Riverside Drive with the now almost empty condo or the land on Fitzwater Street with the one that has been abandoned by the developer and taken over by the construction lender? And what does the appraisal say about the pollution problem?

Comegys and the other Council members who want to buy the site immediately (Smith and Shields) must believe that Kapiloff, an experienced real estate investor, would sell property for $50,000 that is worth seven times that amount. What about you?

And, by the way, wasn’t Comegys the biggest backer, besides Barrie Tilghman, of the Salisbury Mall deal?

Race Pimping in the ‘Bury

Try to protect the Salisbury taxpayer from having to absorb potentially millions of dollars of costs and what does it get you?  You’re called a RACISTS!

Refusing to let their loss over the acquisition of environmentally damaged property on Lake Street die a natural death, the Barrie Comegys party is now trying to smear Mayor Jim Ireton, Councilwoman Terry Cohen, and Councilwoman Debbie Campbell by implying that they are racists.  Their house blog just comes out and says it!

Are they?  Of course not.  However, when people like Salisbury council members Gary Comegys and Shanie Shields can’t afford for the voters to find out what they’re really up to they’ll say or do just about anything.

Salisbury News Awards The Salisbury Zoo The AOTW Ribbon

In the over flow parking lot at the Salisbury Zoo they put down new blue stone in the parking area. Then, (out of pure stupidity) they chose to paint the lines over the loose stones.

Now I could see if they had installed tar first and then put the stone down and then painted lines but this is your tax dollars hard at work.

This is why we have given the City of Salisbury this "AOTW" Award. Let's see how long it takes you to figure it out.

More On HR 3200

Hey Joe,

Obama and the democrats promise every day that all services provided today would continue under the Public Plan.

Attached is page 30 of HR 3200, the House Bill.

If this were the case why would we need a Health Benefits Advisory Committee (line 16) to "recommend covered benefits." To me, this indicates some benefits covered today by the private plans might not be covered under the public plan. How else could this be interpreted?

It is chilling that lines 17 and 18 indicate Obama wants a committee to decide which diseases or medical problems would be covered under one plan but not under a cheaper one. This sounds just as horrible as Obama insists the private health insurance companies are today!

Line 15 states this committee will consist of "medical and other experts." Who will the medical experts be? Doctors? Nurses? Who will the non-medical experts be? Accountants?

To answer these concerns, Obama will squirm (only inside, as he is one hell of a performer) and state HR 3200 is only one of several bills being considered and he never intended all of its parts to be included in the final bill. This is what the mainstream media is already spreading on his behalf.

But remember, the bill Obama urged Congress to vote on and pass prior to the recess was HR3200.

Fleming's Resolution For Congress To Forgo Their Federal Health Insurance

Rep. John Fleming, a Louisiana doctor, is offering Resolution 615 so members that support the federal option are urged to forego their right to participate in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP).

I, ______________________, fully support House Resolution 615, which expresses the sense of the House of Representatives that Members who vote in favor of the establishment of a public, federal government run health insurance option are urged to forgo their right to participate in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP) and agree to enroll under that public option.

I urge my representative, __________________, to become a cosponsor of the resolution and be willing to be accountable for any vote they make to reform health care in America.

Newly Elected Democrats Waver On Health Care Plan

by Daniel Dombey and Tom Braithwaite in Washington

Two freshly elected Democrats are wavering in their support of healthcare reform, as a rancorous summer series of “town hall” debates appears to be hardening opposition against the Obama administration.

Frank Kratovil and Tom Perriello, who as freshmen congressmen would be expected to back the party leadership, both say proposals for expanding coverage to the uninsured are unacceptable in their current form and should focus more on cost savings.Mr Kratovil, who was hanged in effigy by a healthcare protester at a town hall meeting in his state of Maryland, said he would have voted against legislation if it had come to a vote last month.

Tom Perriello, another new representative from neighbouring Virginia, also says he is not yet ready to support the current proposals in the House of Representatives, partly because he is “still getting feedback from . . . constituents”.

Neither man has ruled out voting for a revised package.

Billed as a chance to sell healthcare reform to the American people in small meetings across the country, the town hall debates have seen protesters screaming at their elected representatives.
In spite of hopes by proponents of reform that voters would be turned off by the sometimes ugly scenes, a poll yesterday from USA Today gave an indication that the debates were having the opposite effect.

Some 34 per cent of respondents said the demonstrations had made them more sympathetic to the protesters, while 21 per cent said they were less sympathetic. In the all-important independents grouping, 35 per cent against 16 per cent said they were now more sympathetic to the protesters – a margin of more than two to one.

Health Commissioner

There was a heat index of over 100 degrees outside, but as I read through H.R.3200 the icy chill of Big Brother swept over as I read about the "Health Choice Commissioner". This entity, to be appointed by the President, has God-like powers described in roughly the first 180 pages of H.R.3200. Even more unsettling than the multiple listed duties are the discretionary powers bestowed on this person.

Examples:
p.98 lines 6,7 "...As the Health Choice Commissioner may specify"

p.115 2 "...enfotcement authority retained by the Commissioner"

p.114 22,23 "...as the Commissioner may specify"

p.134 3-9 "the Commissioner may establish..."

p.135 4,5 "as the Commissioner deems appropriate"

p.139 11-14 "the Commissioner may take such steps as may be appropriate"

p.143 1,2 "the Commissioner may impose an additional penalty"

A BLANK CHECK!

I suggest that you read the bill.

Modifying this bill will not do.

It must not pass.

Still not worried? Read p 58, 59 begining line 5. The benevolent Health Choice Commissioner has the right to access your financial records.

Read p 59, line 21. Government has the right to electronically transfer your funds from your bank.

Read p 167 line18-23. If you dont have coverage, Govt will tax you 2.5% each year.

Shadow Art

British-born and -based artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster skilfully skirt the boundaries between beauty and the shadowier aspects of humanity, playing with our perceptions as well as our notions of taste. Many of their most notable pieces are made from piles of rubbish, with light projected against them to create a shadow image entirely different to that seen when looking directly at the deliberately disguised pile.
See more here. Be warned that some of their pieces are more edgy than what you see at this post.

HOW BIG IS WALMART?

1. Americans spend $36,000,000 at Wal-Mart every hour of every day.

2. This works out to $20,928 profit every minute!

3. Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year.

4. Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target + Sears + Costco + K-Mart combined.

5. Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people and is the largest private employer.

6. Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the World.

7. Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger & Safeway combined, and keep in mind they did this in only 15 years.

8. During this same period, 31 supermarket chains sought bankruptcy (including Winn-Dixie).

9. Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world.

10. Wal-Mart has approx 3,900 stores in the USA of which 1,906 are Super Centers; this is 1,000 more than it had 5 years ago.

11 This year 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will occur at a Wal-Mart store. (Earth's population is approximately 6.5 billion.)

12. 90% of all Americans live within 15 miles of a Wal-Mart.

Let Wal-Mart bail out Wall Street!!

Jefferson, Jackson And Lincoln

When Democrats gather to celebrate Jefferson and Jackson as the founders of their party one can hope they would direct attention to these quotes. - As the issues of today are debated all members of congress, the Republican party, the media and the public at large, would do well to heed these words.

Jefferson = "Were we directed from Washington when to sow and when to reap, we should soon want bread."

Jackson = "I am one of those who do not believe that a national debt is a national blessing, but rather a curse to a republic, inasmuch as it is calculated to raise around the ad ministration a moneyed aristocracy dangerous to the liberties of the country."

Another of Jackson's quotes that I particularly like, I don't believe was meant for the congress, but it could apply to them today. -
"You are a den of vipers and thieves, I intend to rout you out, and by the grace of the eternal God, will rout you out."

I would hope that attention is also paid to a little known quote from Abraham Lincoln, the first Republican President. -
" Public sentiment is everything, with public sentiment nothing can fail, without it nothing can succeed."

How The White House's Deal With Big Pharma Undermines Democracy

Posted by Robert Reich

I'm a strong supporter of universal health insurance, and a fan of the Obama administration. But I'm appalled by the deal the White House has made with the pharmaceutical industry's lobbying arm to buy their support.

Last week, after being reported in the Los Angeles Times, the White House confirmed it has promised Big Pharma that any healthcare legislation will bar the government from using its huge purchasing power to negotiate lower drug prices. That's basically the same deal George W. Bush struck in getting the Medicare drug benefit, and it's proven a bonanza for the drug industry. A continuation will be an even larger bonanza, given all the Boomers who will be enrolling in Medicare over the next decade. And it will be a gold mine if the deal extends to Medicaid, which will be expanded under most versions of the healthcare bills now emerging from Congress, and to any public option that might be included. (We don't know how far the deal extends beyond Medicare because its details haven't been made public.)

Let me remind you: Any bonanza for the drug industry means higher health-care costs for the rest of us, which is one reason why critics of the emerging healthcare plans, including the Congressional Budget Office, are so worried about their failure to adequately stem future healthcare costs. To be sure, as part of its deal with the White House, Big Pharma apparently has promised to cut future drug costs by $80 billion. But neither the industry nor the White House nor any congressional committee has announced exactly where the $80 billion in savings will show up nor how this portion of the deal will be enforced. In any event, you can bet that the bonanza Big Pharma will reap far exceeds $80 billion. Otherwise, why would it have agreed?

In return, Big Pharma isn't just supporting universal health care. It's also spending a lots of money on TV and radio advertising in support. Sunday's New York Times reports that Big Pharma has budgeted $150 million for TV ads promoting universal health insurance, starting this August (that's more money than John McCain spent on TV advertising in last year's presidential campaign), after having already spent a bundle through advocacy groups like Healthy Economies Now and Families USA.

I want universal health insurance. And having had a front-row seat in 1994 when Big Pharma and the rest of the health-industry complex went to battle against it, I can tell you first hand how big and effective the onslaught can be. So I appreciate Big Pharma's support this time around, and I like it that the industry is doing the reverse of what it did last time, and airing ads to persuade the public of the rightness of the White House's effort.

But I also care about democracy, and the deal between Big Pharma and the White House frankly worries me. It's bad enough when industry lobbyists extract concessions from members of Congress, which happens all the time. But when an industry gets secret concessions out of the White House in return for a promise to lend the industry's support to a key piece of legislation, we're in big trouble. That's called extortion: An industry is using its capacity to threaten or prevent legislation as a means of altering that legislation for its own benefit. And it's doing so at the highest reaches of our government, in the office of the President.

When the industry support comes with an industry-sponsored ad campaign in favor of that legislation, the threat to democracy is even greater. Citizens end up paying for advertisements designed to persuade them that the legislation is in their interest. In this case, those payments come in the form of drug prices that will be higher than otherwise, stretching years into the future.

I don't want to be puritanical about all this. Politics is a rough game in which means and ends often get mixed and melded. Perhaps the White House deal with Big Pharma is a necessary step to get anything resembling universal health insurance. But if that's the case, our democracy is in terrible shape. How soon until big industries and their Washington lobbyists have become so politically powerful that secret White House-industry deals like this are prerequisites to any important legislation? When will it become standard practice that such deals come with hundreds of millions of dollars of industry-sponsored TV advertising designed to persuade the public that the legislation is in the public's interest? (Any Democrats and progressives who might be reading this should ask themselves how they'll feel when a Republican White House cuts such deals to advance its own legislative priorities.)

We're on a precarious road -- and wherever it leads, it's not toward democracy.

Delmar Needs Code & Compliance

Little Johnny- Obama Fan

A teacher asked her 6th grade class how many of them were Obama fans.

Not really knowing what an Obama fan is, but wanting to be liked by the teacher, all the kids raised their hands except for little Johnny.

The teacher asked Little Johnny why he has decided to be different.

Little Johnny said, 'Because I'm not an Obama fan.'

The teacher asked, 'Why aren't you an Obama fan?'

Johnny said, 'Because I'm a Republican.'

The teacher asked him why he's a Republican.

Little Johnny answered, 'Well, my Mom's a Republican and my Dad's a Republican, so I'm a Republican.'

Annoyed by this answer, the teacher asked, 'If your mom was a moron and your dad was an idiot, what would that make you?'

With a big smile, Little Johnny replied, That would make me an Obama fan.

Lowe's Gets Tagged AGAIN!

A new trailer sat in the parking lot for a few days with nothing on it. All of a sudden I drove by and BAM, they did it again. This time I happened to notice a camera on the corner of Lowe's and you have to wonder, do they have them recorded? Does the SPD care? Do they have any idea how many people are subjected to this week after week, year after year. Kinda sucks, if you ask me.

Would You Miss Saturday Postal Service Delivery?

Let's get real here Folks. The USPS is talking about ways to cut back and save money. IMHO, I couldn't care less about a Saturday delivery. In fact, IMHO, if they only delivered the mail ONCE A WEEK I'd be happy!

If I NEEDED my mail, well, I'd have to go directly to my Post Office and get it myself if it was that important to me, what do you think of that?

Our ridiculous Government Employees just can't use their heads and that's the problem. Hell, they have a monopoly on the residential postal service, so its not like they have to worry how they run their business.

Anyhow, what do YOU think. Should they eliminate Saturday home deliveries? Do you like my other idea about home delivery once a week and if you want daily service you can stop by the Post Office and collect your mail? Think of the cutbacks they could provide right there.
