Ener1 Now Added to Growing List Of Failed Energy Companies Backed By The Administration

Yesterday, it was announced that Ener1 an Obama Administration backed electric car battery manufacturer filed for bankruptcy after receiving $118 million in Stimulus money from the Department of Energy (DOE). Ener1 marks the third company to declare bankruptcy after receiving large Stimulus grants from the Obama Administration. Last year Solyndra declared bankruptcy after receiving $528 million in Stimulus money as did Beacon Power after it received $43 million from DOE.

“In May I held a subcommittee hearing questioning the lack of transparency regarding how Stimulus funds are distributed,” said Rep. Andy Harris. “Now we have yet another company that received hard-working taxpayers’ dollars that declared bankruptcy after wasting $118 million. Ener1 is just the latest in a growing and disturbing trend of Obama administration decisions that have wasted hundreds of millions of hard-working taxpayers’ dollars to benefit politically connected Obama donors. Picking winners and losers based on crony capitalism is wrong and must come to an end.”

Rally For Marriage And Family

Charles Lollar will be speaking at the Rally for Marriage and Family in Annapolis this Monday (30-Jan-2012) from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in Lawyers Square located just outside of the State Capital building.

“These times are significant as our state legislators will be leaving their office to walk across the street for their nightly session” Julia Vidmar of the Maryland Marriage Alliance organization told New Day Maryland this week.

All attending the rally are being asked to come to the hearing on the bill which will take place at 1:00 pm the following day (31-Jan).

"This bill will either keep our current Marriage Laws in tact if defeated or change them to further demise morality and tear away at the fundamental framework of the country in the state of MD and the U.S." according to Charles Lollar, Chairman of New Day Maryland.

The bill was introduced earlier this week on Tuesday with as many as 40 people standing alongside Governor O’Malley – including “faith” leaders. We believe the bill is a long-shot at best for being passed. Without many of the Democrats and only 1 Republican State Senator (Allen Kittleman) siding with the Governor in support of the bill, even Governor O’Malley stated that "if this bill is passed it will likely be petitioned to referendum."

We at New Day Maryland recognize that Governor O’Malley and his administration is using his last days and term in office to throw everything they can at Maryland that is bad for our economy and our families. This is just one more blow and an attempt to divide citizens of this state.

Help us create a New Day in Maryland by keeping marriages as they were intended to be. O’Malley’s puppets even recognize that marriage is between one man and one woman according to statements reported in the Baltimore Sun earlier this week. Why they would fail to stand on their faith and on the truth in which they believe is beyond our understanding and control. We are neither called nor intended to co-exsist as faith based people with those who choose to live their lives “alternatively.” We are, however, called to stand on the truth.

The truth is: Traditional marriage is the backbone of this country. It is the moral high road which is the road our Government at every level should be looking to support, not to mention those who call themselves ministers.

New Day Maryland is looking forward to standing with ministers like Rev. Derrick McCoy and Maryland State Senator [and pastor] Anthony Muse (D-Prince Georges County) to keep marriage laws as they currently stand. We urge all Republicans in the Maryland Legislature to take the side of Conservatism and defeat this bill handily, reaching across the aisle to stand with those who agree with us on this issue.

We hope you will join us on Monday.

Redefining Action Hero: Bill Gates Is Better Than Batman

I have a lot of respect for Bill Gates. Not just because he’s been wildly successful, but because as far as I can understand, he’s kept a steady head about him in spite of his success. As one of the wealthiest men in the world, he’s also making a name for himself as one of the most philanthropic.

Obviously most of us don’t have the kind of capital that Bill Gates has to work with, but I feel that everyone could learn from his philosophy towards philanthropy. I admire that his approach is both compassionate and practical. He sees charitable endeavors as something well worth investing in, because ultimately everyone benefits from an overall better quality of life around the world. He sums it up himself pretty well: “[The] hybrid engine of self-interest and concern for others can serve a much wider circle of people than can be reached by self-interest or caring alone.” I feel like that’s a refreshingly balanced philosophy. Not only that, but as this Infographic shows, there are direct results that speak to just how powerful a well-informed and carefully invested philanthropist can be.

Read on to find out more about the powerful things happening at the hands of Bill Gates, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the legacy of philanthropy started by some of America’s most successful and most innovative figures. It’s nice to remember that success doesn’t always create greed — it can enable a powerful force of giving and problem-solving.

"Fracking": Is It A Dirty Word?

(AP)
NEW YORK - A different kind of F-word is stirring a linguistic and political debate as controversial as what it defines.
The word is "fracking" — as in hydraulic fracturing, a technique long used by the oil and gas industry to free oil and gas from rock.
It's not in the dictionary, the industry hates it, and President Obama didn't use it in his State of the Union speech — even as he praised federal subsidies for it.

Low IQ & Conservative Beliefs Linked To Prejudice

There's no gentle way to put it: People who give in to racism and prejudice may simply be dumb, according to a new study that is bound to stir public controversy.

The research finds that children with low intelligence are more likely to hold prejudiced attitudes as adults. These findings point to a vicious cycle, according to lead researcher Gordon Hodson, a psychologist at Brock University in Ontario. Low-intelligence adults tend to gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, the study found. Those ideologies, in turn, stress hierarchy and resistance to change, attitudes that can contribute to prejudice, Hodson wrote in an email to LiveScience.

"Prejudice is extremely complex and multifaceted, making it critical that any factors contributing to bias are uncovered and understood," he said.

How Presidential Candidate Ron Paul's Campaign Could End The Fed

Led by presidential candidate Ron Paul's "end the Fed" mantra, Republicans have made their attacks on the U.S. Federal Reserve into an election year rallying cry.

It's one that could turn ugly in November if the GOP manages to score big.

Where Paul has been the lone voice in the wilderness criticizing the central bank for years, others in the GOP recently adopted the Fed as a scapegoat for the financial crisis of 2008.

Many of the Republican attacks include calls to fire Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke and to scale back the Fed's mandate - or in Paul's case, eradicate it altogether.

And while Paul - who actually wrote a book called "End the Fed" in 2008 - has little chance of becoming the nominee, his campaign does have a larger philosophical objective.

"It is Paul's goal to permanently establish within the Republican Party a group that is dead set on not having the Fed," Douglas Holtz-Eakin, chief economic adviser to Sen. John McCain, R-AZ, during his 2008 run for the presidency, told MarketWatch. "This is not going away."

Florida Republican Congressional Candidate Equates Obama’s First Term To ‘Slave Ship’

For those of you unfortunate enough to reside in a viable primary voting state, it’s safe to assume plunging into the Arctic Sea may be a nice respite. From Herman Cain’s bizarre “smoking ad” to Rick Perry’s odd ”gays ruining Christmas” ad, American voters are left to ponder the merits of an autocracy.

Mark Oxner, a Republican running for Congress against liberal firebrand Alan Grayson, who has decided to make thinking people happy by running again, in Florida’s new 27th district, recently released this utterly insane ad. The ad, oddly enough, depicts President Obama as a pirate who enslaves children to row his ship to its demise over a waterfall. The also video features several men and woman on a boat–”The U.S.S. Obamaship“–discussing how “this ship” has given them various benefits, such as a bank bailout and “free health care for life.”

Money In America, Part Four

The National Monetary Commission in 1908

Informing the public via a predetermined public relation campaign, with surveys and solutions of a predetermined outcome worked well. Keeping the scheme going for a decade took time, effort, and investment.

With the passage of the Aldrich-Vreeland Act in 1908 contained two important but little-known provisions: the emergency currency potential and the establishment of the NMC. The former provision would have expired in 1914 but curiously, was used for the one and only time that year.

However, Aldrich had packed his commission in June of 1908 with senators and representatives but, more significantly, powerful banking leaders.

This junket headed for Europe in the fall, studying and gather information with heads of private European banks and central banks. They concluded European banking was more efficient and the European currencies had more gravitas compared to the dollar. By December,, back in the U.S., Aldrich added Paul Warburg and others to the inner circle. Charles A. Conant was chosen for ‘research and public relations’. Warburg consulted with many academic economists at top-tier universities.

The American Bankers Association recommended a U.S. Central bank along the lines of the German Reichsbank. Hesitant heads of national banks were assured the business model would not be adversely affected by the origin of a U.S. Central bank.

Regional banking districts in the country, under control of a central board, was a recommentation in November, 1909. Throughout this whole era, the Morgan and Rockefeller banking interests had agreed to agree on a central bank. Yes.

Pa. Carjack-Hoax Mom Gets 8 Years For $1M Fraud

The in-vitro treatments. The suburban house. The frequent trips and dinners out.

None of it was worth it, a soccer mom-turned-"abduction hoax" mom told a federal judge Thursday before she was sentenced to more than eight years in prison for a $1 million swindle.

Bonnie Sweeten, 40, of Feasterville, is infamous for an alarming 911 call that claimed she and her daughter had been carjacked by two black men. She said they'd been stuffed into the trunk of another vehicle. She made an equally furtive call to her second husband.

(See Taylor Conant on Marc Rich) It is the the most expensive NYC co-op to ever go up for saleNyPo reports:

The digs are so expansive that Rich — who penned the lyrics to such hits as the Aretha Franklin-Mary J. Blige duet, “Don’t Waste Your Time,” and Mandy Moore’s “Candy” — once converted one of her three terraces into a professional-grade figure-skating rink for a blowout party.

The other two outdoor spaces are a rooftop terrace that can hold up to 200 people and a separate wraparound terrace.

The 12,000-square-foot duplex, right on the corner of East 60th Street, was designed by Emery Roth and boasts seven bedrooms, 11 baths and three kitchens. There’s also a grand salon, a formal dining room seating 22, a media room, a billiards room, a full gym and a library with a fireplace.Oh, and sweeping views across Central Park.

A Post-SOTU Analysis

They are saying Obama will layout a "new vision" for this country. Sorry, Marx already had that vision. It is hardly new.

I interviewed PJTV’s Vodka Pundit (Stephen Green) and took his advice: start drinking before this freak show and have no plan to stop for a while.

First, everyone wants to know the night's winning numbers: We have 59 "I"'s. Note, one "I" was not counted because in was a quote from someone else. There were 13 "my"'s and 11 "me"'s.
There were 3 "it's Bush fault"'s. I couldn't keep count of the "it's the fault of a do nothing congress"'s because many of them were a bit oblique.

I did notice a pattern to Obama's word usage. He is an "I" junkie. He uses "me" and "my" like Methadone to push the next "I" fix out a few more seconds. Then like a drowning man, when he gets his face to the surface, he gulps a mouthful of "I"'s. Like a junkie, he sneaks an "I" into a sentence when he thinks no one will notice.

Some of the "we"'s suggest Obama had a mouse in his pocket.

BREAKING: TransCanada’s Dirty Keystone XL Jobs Claims Draw Complaint To SEC

ThinkProgress Green has learned that TransCanada, the foreign tar sands company behind the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, is facing a potential inquiry into whether it deliberately deceived investors by inflating the job-creation potential of the project.
Greenpeace has filed a complaint with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) over TransCanada’s “false or misleading statements about the proposed Keystone XL pipeline project.” In the complaint, Greenpeace shows evidence from TransCanada’s Canadian filings and the State Department that the project would involve fewer than 1000 in-state jobs, and around 6000 total jobs. This evidence is contrasted with TransCanada’s (TRP) repeated public pronouncements that pipeline construction would involve 20,000 American jobs:

STOP THE RIDE, I WANNA GET OFF

Paul Craig Roberts here with an excellent piece posted over on Lew Rockwell’s site today.

Since it obvious that this country is fully immersed in shitter-water, and that there will be no ballot that allows “None of the Above”, and that Fascist Party of Washington will never allow any serious second party competition, and that even if Ron Paul were to win out over the sacks of shit parading themselves about, nothing much would get done due to the selfish obstructionism of our corporatist puppet legislature, I propose the following:

In the event that Ron Paul is not present on the ballots of all 50 states, we should organize and effect a general boycott of the election process entirely. One massive, resounding vote of No Confidence against the oligarchy and their minions. Then, upon completion of this goal, we gather up everybody we can possibly find and converge on Washington DC with the sole aim of removing from power EVERY SINGLE ROTTEN ONE OF THEM. Voting is pointless. Writing letters and emails is pointless. Calling them is pointless. Attempts at limiting or abolishing corporate campaign contributions have utterly failed, thanks to the equally corrupted Supreme Court. Attempts at establishing term limits have utterly failed, despite decades of citizen calls to do just that. Attempts to curtail or abolish the Federal Reserve have utterly failed. Vast majorities who specifically demanded that banks not be bailed out were treasonously ignored.
Vast majorities that oppose foreign wars of conquest are treasonously ignored. Everyone that opposes the treasonous militarization of allegedly civilian police departments are themselves labeled as traitors. Citizens that dare to speak out against this list of government and corporatist abuses are beaten, shot, electrocuted, gassed, arrested, or simply disappeared. Citizens and soldiers that witness abuses and expose them are detained and tortured, having had all of their Constitutional Rights rescinded by Imperial Decree.

Does ANYONE have evidence to the effect that we are not, in fact, currently at war with this government?

DON'T LET OBAMA PICK YOUR INVESTMENTS

This President is priceless. Government picking green energy winners is the gift that keeps giving. They pick ethanol and hundreds of ethanol plants end up bankrupt. The Chevy Volt, when it isn’t exploding, is selling like hotcakes. I think they might have sold 300 in 2011. I can’t wait to see what Obama is going to support next with our tax dollars. Maybe Zepplins powered by butterflys.

Remember that one keyword that oddly enough never made it’s way into the president’s largely recycled SOTU address – “Solyndra”? It is about to make a double or nothing repeat appearance, now that Ener1, another company that was backed by Obama, this time a electric car battery-maker, has filed for bankruptcy. Net result: taxpayers lose $118.5 million. The irony is that while Solyndra may have been missing from the SOTU, Ener1 made an indirect appearance: “In three years, our partnership with the private sector has already positioned America to be the world’s leading manufacturer of high-tech batteries.” Uh, no. Actually, the correct phrasing is: “…positioned America to be the world’s leading manufacturer of insolvent, bloated subsidized entities that are proof central planning at any level does not work but we can keep doing the same idiocy over and over hoping the final result will actually be different eventually.” We can’t wait to find out just which of Obama’s handlers was may have been responsible for this latest gross capital misallocation. In the meantime, the 1,700 jobs “created” with the fake creation of Ener1, have just been lost.

Corruption Scandal Rocks Vatican, Whistle Blower Archbishop Vigano Was Transferred Against His Will

The Vatican was shaken by a corruption scandal Thursday after an Italian television investigation said a former top official had been transferred against his will after complaining about irregularities in awarding contracts.
The show "The Untouchables" on the respected private television network La 7 Wednesday night showed what it said were several letters that Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, who was then deputy-governor of Vatican City, sent to superiors, including Pope Benedict, in 2011 about the corruption.
The Vatican issued a statement Thursday criticizing the "methods" used in the journalistic investigation. But it confirmed that the letters were authentic by expressing "sadness over the publication of reserved documents."

Breaking Up The Western World

Isn't it just as likely that Britain will hit the rocks and break up? ... In the period immediately after the Costa Concordia hit a rock off the coast of Tuscany, the behaviour of the passengers and crew has given us all sorts of insights into the eternal glories and failings of human nature.
Perhaps the most symbolically pregnant gesture took place in the dining room. When the crockery started to slide from the tables, as the ship began to list, the waiters just picked it up and put it back. "It is nothing!" they said soothingly. "It is an electrical fault. Tutto va bene and what would madame like for the antipasto?"... I am like the Concordia waiters, in that I can't really believe, somehow, that we can be set on a course for destruction. But look at the facts, my friends. Look at that submerged reef marked "devo max", or fiscal independence for Scotland. If you can unpick the fiscal union, what is there to maintain the monetary union? And if you unpick monetary union — as George Osborne rightly points out — then political union is dead ... That is the nature of slo-mo disasters: they can change very quickly, from being an outlandish theoretical possibility to a predestined inevitability. – Boris Johnson, UK Telegraph

Dominant Social Theme: Things fall apart. The center cannot hold.

Free-Market Analysis: The Telegraph's Boris Johnson has written an interesting article on the potential break-up of Britain, comparing it to the unexpected Costa Concordia cruise ship disaster.

In a sense this article by Johnson is part of a larger power elite dominant social theme, in our view. The rhetoric of fear-based promotions by various Anglosphere mouthpieces has grown a good deal more shrill of late.

We pointed out just yesterday that George Soros is predicting significant unrest in the United States. His vehicle of choice is Occupy Wall Street and, according to a reporter, he sounded almost gleeful about the prospect.

From our point of view, Soros is a power elite operative, doing the bidding of that select group of powerful families who control the world's central banks and are trying to set up one-world government.

Stripe Bass Quota Raises Questions On The Eastern Shore

“Clearly Senator James Mathias believes that the Department of Natural Resources can act in any way they want, without accountability, questioning, or critique, especially without regard for the fisherman of the Eastern Shore. I was elected to represent the needs of the 38th District and stand as a guardian for those whose voices are being drowned out” replied Delegate Mike McDermott when asked about the exchange between himself and Senator Mathias at the Eastern Shore Delegation meeting this morning. Based on their conversation during the meeting, Senator Mathias seemed to imply that it in a contest between the two, agency perogatives win over constituent needs.

“Nowhere would an employee of a company be docked 5% of their pay on the presumption that they will steal that same 5% from their employer. It is an absurd premise. I believe that once a quota for the fisherman is established, it should be kept -- I don’t believe that it should be changed midstream, especially after the fisherman have already established their budgets for the year. I would demand an explanation I lost 5% of my budgeted income, as is the case for many fisherman” responded Delegate McDermott. During the meeting, Delegate McDermott asked Secretary John Griffin about the decision to reduce the 2012 Commercial Striped Bass Quota by 5%. Depriving our hard working Waterman of their full catch quota could collectively cost them $300,000.00 at a time in our economy when few can afford loss.

“Fishing quotas are important because they protect Maryland’s ecosystems which many citizens heavily rely on. However, at some point there must be a balance between the economy of the bay area and the waterman that live there” replied. Delegate McDermott. Delegates of the Eastern Shore joined Delegate McDermott in his letter requesting that the 5% quota be restored; Senator Mathias chose not to endorse that letter. “I do not believe that it is improper to simply ask state agencies to explain policies that may seem arbitrary in how they affect people’s lives” concluded Delegate McDermott.

Some 500 tacos were delivered to his office Thursday after a Latino activist group called Junta for Progressive Action launched a text-for-tacos campaign to draw attention to the comment, which Maturo later apologized for. In the interview Tuesday, a local reporter pointed out that there were no Latino officers on East Haven's police force.

Update: America Has A $16.4 Trillion Debt Ceiling In 52-44 Senate Vote

Update: the Senate has failed to reject a bid to stop the debt ceiling hike with a simple 52 vote majority all of it along party lines. The US now has $16.4 trillion in debt capacity as of Friday. Since roughly $100 billion was plundered from Pension Funds in the past month, The US will have about $15.4 trillion in debt with the Monday DTS. The question then is how long will the $1 trillion in debt capacity last: at $125 billion/month it won't be enough to carry the US past the election without another massive debt ceiling spectacle.

While Congress recently voted down the increase in the US debt ceiling, that vote was largely irrelevant. And all that matters is how the Senate will vote. Watch it live in progress below. It is virtually unlikely that the process of debt ceiling increase will be overturned so within minutes the US should have a brand spaking new debt ceiling of $16.4 trillion.

Obama To Ignore Order To Appear In Atlanta Court

President Obama will ignore an order by an Atlanta judge to appear in court Thursday for a hearing in a case challenging his qualifications under the Constitution to be president.

According to the White House, Obama will continue with his current trip out West, starting the day in Las Vegas and then continuing on to Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora, Colorado before heading to Detroit where he will spend the night.

The Associated Press reported last week that the judge had denied a motion to quash a subpoena for the president to show up for the hearing, which is scheduled for 9 am ET. Obama may still be sleeping – it will only be 6 am in Las Vegas.

The case centers on whether Obama, whose father was Kenyan, qualifies as a “natural born citizen,” as required of a president under the Constitution. Some contend that “natural born citizen” means both of a presidential candidate’s parents must be U.S. citizens.

HERE'S YOUR HOUSING RECOVERY

Have you been hearing all the blather about the housing recovery lately? The shills and shysters on CNBC and trotted out from the NAR and Wall Street criminal banks have been proclaiming a turnaround in the housing market. Home builder stocks have been soaring because they just know things are getting better. Well the story shit the bed this morning. You see 2011 finished with lowest new home sales in the history of record keeping. There were a total of 302,000 new home sales in all of 2011. The records go back to 1963 when 500,000 new homes were sold. There were 189 million people living in the U.S. in 1963. Today there are 310 million people. So the population is 64% greater and new home sales are 40% lower than in 1963. I wonder why? Could it be that our country is drowning in debt today and in 1963 we had virtually no debt in our society? No credit cards in 1963. People worked and saved until they could afford a house or a car. They paid cash for stuff they wanted or needed.

How Fox News Is Destroying The Republican Party

Wannabe kingmaker Roger Ailes is facing an open revolt.

More and more despondent conservatives are expressing alarm over the unfolding Republican primary season and what they see as the party's dwindling chances of defeating President Obama in November. Spooked at the general elections prospects facing frontrunners Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich (especially Gingrich), members of the so-called Republican Establishment seem to want to reboot the election season and try their nominating luck again.

 Sorry, it's too late.

Bob Dole: If Newt Is The Nominee, Obama Wins By "landslide"

WASHINGTON--Former Sen. Bob Dole, the 1996 GOP presidential nominee on Thursday blistered GOP White House hopeful Newt Gingrich, saying if he is the nominee President Barack Obama will win by a "landslide" and the House will lose Republican seats. Dole speaks out in advance of the Jan. 31 Florida primary, where polls put Gingrich ahead or tied with Mitt Romney.
The Romney campaign released a strongly worded letter from Dole, who served while Gingrich was House Speaker. He was beat by President Bill Clinton in the 1996 contest. Dole said he was defeated in part by negative ads--featuring Gingrich.
Dole: "I have not been critical of Newt Gingrich but it is now time to take a stand before it is too late. If Gingrich is the nominee it will have an adverse impact on Republican candidates running for county, state, and federal offices. Hardly anyone who served with Newt in Congress has endorsed him and that fact speaks for itself. He was a one-man-band who rarely took advice. It was his way or the highway.

This Week In Comments

It's been a while since I published this information but I thought it would be a good time to share.

This week comments have come in as follows.

Sunday, 185

Monday, 274

Tuesday, 272

Wednesday, 285

Thursday, 330, so far.

So why is this significant, go take a look at the Daily Times or any other Site here on the Shore. I truly feel getting people involved in what's going on locally and or around the country is the biggest key towards CHANGE.

It's one thing to put news and information out there but it's another thing when YOU get involved. Your voice creates change. Agree or disagree, we need to collectively let our voices be heard and trust me, our politicians are not only coming to Salisbury News, they're listening.

We can put the information out there but only YOU can make a difference. No one on Salisbury News is ever making an attempt to find IP Addresses. We NEVER give up information, unless you threaten some one's life.

Participate and make a difference. Stay on topic and write your comment knowing our local and state officials are listening. I speak to them regularly and they talk about what's been said in comments.

Thanks for visiting. This week has been the best week of visitors Salisbury News has experienced. Our numbers grow constantly, (which amazes me) and the coolest part is, once people come here they keep coming back. I want to thank you for the comments and encourage you to speak up and be heard.

Don’t Call Introverted Children ‘Shy’

Society rewards extroverts, but quiet types have a hidden strength all their own
Imagine a 2-year-old who greets you with a huge smile, offering a toy. Now here’s another child who regards you gravely and hides behind his parent’s leg. How do you feel about these two children? If you’re like most people, you think of the first child as social and the second as reserved, or as everyone tends to interpret, “shy.”

From a very young age, we categorize children as one or the other, and we usually privilege the social designation. But this misses what’s really going on with standoffish kids. Many were born with a careful, sensitive temperament that predisposes them to look before they leap. And this can pay off handsomely as they grow, in the form of strong academics, enhanced creativity and even a unique brand of leadership and empathy.

STATEMENT FROM FIRST LADY KATIE O’MALLEY ON COMMENTS MADE DURING THE CREATING CHANGE CONFERENCE

ANNAPOLIS, MD (January 27, 2012) – First Lady Katie O’Malley released the following statement today following her comments at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s 24th Conference on LGBT Equality:

“I regret my recent choice of words at the Creating Change Conference last night. I let my feelings get the better of me. I deeply respect that there are strongly held and differing views on marriage equality in Maryland, but hope that our State’s elected officials will come together to fairly address this important issue for our families and children.

“We all want the same thing for our kids – we all want our children to live in loving, stable, committed households that are protected equally under the law. No child should be punished because he or she happens to live in a state that doesn’t recognize the love that his or her parents share. It’s about equal rights for everyone, no matter who they are, or who they love.”

Senate Overwhelmingly Passes Sunday Hunting Bill

RICHMOND, Va. - Hunting on private land on Sundays is one step closer to becoming law with passage of a bill by the Virginia Senate.

Sen. Ralph Northam's measure advanced to the House of Delegates on a 29-11 vote over the objection of senators who said it would discourage people from other outdoor pursuits on Sundays, the only day when sportsmen aren't firing guns nearby.

Atheist Teen Forces School To Remove Prayer From Wall After 49 Years

State Representative calls girl, who has been escorted by police to school, 'an evil little thing'

She is 16, the daughter of a firefighter and a nurse, a self-proclaimed nerd who loves Harry Potter and Facebook. But Jessica Ahlquist is also an outspoken atheist who has incensed this heavily Roman Catholic city with a successful lawsuit to get a prayer removed from the wall of her high school auditorium, where it has hung for 49 years.
A federal judge ruled this month that the prayer’s presence at Cranston High School West was unconstitutional, concluding that it violated the principle of government neutrality in religion.

A Letter To The Editor 1-27-12

http://papersplease.org/wp/mocek/

Why is this case important?

So far as we know, this was the first time someone in the USA was arrested or charged with a crime for attempting to exercise their right to travel by air without showing ID or answering questions about themselves or their trip, or for photography or audio or video recording at a TSA checkpoint.

Is there any law that requires you to show ID credentials to fly, or to the police?

No. In Gilmore v. Gonzales (decided at 435 F.3d 1125), a case involving the same airline, lawyers for the TSA swore to the 9th Circuit US Court of Appeals that no Federal law or regulation requires airline passengers to show any evidence of their ID in order to fly.

He was found not guilty. contrary to what we are told, we do not have to show I.D. to fly. We do not have to answer questions about our identity, to T.S.A. or police.

WICOMICO COUNTY RESIDENTS SAVE BIG WITH PRESCRIPTION DISCOUNT CARD PROGRAM

The Wicomico County prescription discount card offers significant savings for both uninsured and underinsured residents.

Salisbury, MD
-- January 26, 2012 Wicomico County Executive Rick Pollitt and County Health Officer Lori Brewster have just announced that in 2011, residents using the Wicomico County free prescription discount program saved $41,034.93 on the cost of their prescriptions. More than 3,600 prescriptions were filled with an average savings of 25% off commonly prescribed medications.

In 2008, Wicomico County launched the program to help consumers cope with the high price of prescriptions. Since then, the discount prescription card program has saved residents more than $235,000. Through the program, the county is making the free prescription discount cards available through a partnership with the National Association of Counties (NACo). The program is free to the county and to residents.

“Every cardholder has the opportunity to use the card, including people with insurance coverage that might exclude certain drugs,” Pollitt said, “It’s easy to present the card, which has no limits on how often it may be used, and there is no membership fee or enrollment form.”

The cards may be used by all county residents, regardless of age, income and existing health coverage, and are accepted at more than 25 of the county’s pharmacies. A national network of more than 60,000 participating retail pharmacies also honor the Wicomico County Prescription Discount card. The card can be used on all prescriptions not covered by insurance, as well as on pet medications.

Cards are available at the Wicomico County Health Department or participating pharmacies. Visit www.wicomicohealth.org, or call toll free 1-877-321-2652 for additional assistance with the program.

List Of 15 Gifts For Men

Here are some gift ideas for those special men in your life!

Buying gifts for men is not nearly as complicated as it is for women. Follow these rules and you should have no problems.

Rule #1: When in doubt – buy him a cordless drill. It does not matter if he already has one. I have a friend who owns 17 and he has yet to complain. As a man, you can never have too many cordless drills. No one knows why.

Rule #2: If you cannot afford a cordless drill, buy him anything with the word ratchet or socket in it. Men love saying those two words. “Hey George, can I borrow your ratchet?” “OK. Bye-the-way, are you through with my 3/8-inch socket yet?” Again, no one knows why.

Rule #3: If you are really, really broke, buy him anything for his car. A 99-cent ice scraper, a small bottle of deicer or something to hang from his rear view mirror. Men love gifts for their cars. No one knows why.

Rule #4: Do not buy men socks. Do not buy men ties. And never buy men bathrobes. I was told that if God had wanted men to wear bathrobes, he wouldn’t have invented Jockey shorts.

Rule #5: You can buy men new remote controls to replace the ones they have worn out. If you have a lot of money buy your man a big- screen TV with the little picture in the corner. Watch him go wild as he flips, and flips, and flips.

Rule #6: Do not buy a man any of those fancy liqueurs. If you do, it will sit in a cupboard for 23 years. Real men drink whiskey or beer.

Rule #7: Do not buy any man industrial-sized canisters of after- shave or deodorant. I’m told they do not stink – they are earthy.

Rule #8: Buy men label makers. Almost as good as cordless drills. Within a couple of weeks there will be labels absolutely everywhere. “Socks. Shorts. Cups. Saucers. Door. Lock. Sink.” You get the idea. No one knows why.

Rule #9: Never buy a man anything that says “some assembly required” on the box. It will ruin his Special Day and he will always have parts left over.

Rule #10: Good places to shop for men include Northwest Iron Works, Parr Lumber, Home Depot, John Deere, Valley RV Center, and Les Schwab Tire. (NAPA Auto Parts and Sears Clearance Centers are also excellent men’s stores. It doesn’t matter if he doesn’t know what it is. “From NAPA Auto, eh? Must be something I need. Hey! Isn’t this a starter for a ’68 Ford Fairlane? Wow! Thanks.”)

Rule #11: Men enjoy danger. That’s why they never cook – but they will barbecue. Get him a monster barbecue with a 100-pound propane tank. Tell him the gas line leaks. “Oh the thrill! The challenge! Who wants a hamburger?”

Rule #12: Tickets to a football game are a smart gift. However, he will not appreciate tickets to “A Retrospective of 19th Century Quilts.” everyone knows why.

Rule #13: Men love chainsaws. Never, ever, buy a man you love a chainsaw. If you don’t know why – please refer to Rule #8 and what happens when he gets a label maker.

Rule #14: It’s hard to beat a really good wheelbarrow or an aluminum extension ladder. Never buy a real man a stepladder. It must be an extension ladder. No one knows why.

Rule #15: Rope. Men love rope. It takes us back to our cowboy origins, or at least The Boy Scouts. Nothing says love like a hundred feet of 3/8″ manila rope. No one knows why.

One Reason You Were Mislead About Bennett Middle School

Even though the official documents state the school has issues, LOOK AGAIN!!!!!

HOW OLD IS THE CURRENT BENNETT MIDDLE SCHOOL?????? Was it built in 1982 or 1987? I THINK NOT!

25 - 30 YEARS? TRY THIS, it was built in 1965.

"One would anticipate" the group that was analyzing the project would come to understand when the school was actually built and HOW OLD it truly is. They are saying that school is in the shape one would expect it to be after 25-30 years.

Considering how OLD Bennett Middle School is, even by their own evaluation, that school is in GREAT SHAPE. However, you're NOT hearing or seeing this information ANYWHERE ELSE! We didn't make this up Folks. What you are seeing above comes from the official Bennett Middle School Feasibility Study.

I think I better sit back for a while today and read ALL of the reports I've been able to get my hands on. To give you another idea, Wi Middle School was built in 1930 and is on schedule to get new air conditioning.

Things that make you go, hmmmmmmm?

Two Critical Pieces of Legislation Will Be Introduced In Congress This Week

Democrat Chris Van Hollen in the House plans to introduce an updated version of the DISCLOSE Act forcing corporate entities behind SuperPAC ads to disclose who they are. A version of this legislation passed the House in 2010 – but died in the Senate because of a Republican filibuster. Considering we’re on the verge of a billion-dollar election – this is much-needed legislation to bring at least a little bit of transparency to the sell-off of our democracy. Also – Democratic Senator Al Franken is teaming up with Tea Party Congressman Jeff Landry in the House to introduce legislation to strip out the controversial “indefinite detainee” provision in the Defense Authorization Act passed by Congress and recently signed by the President. Thankfully for the United States – upholding Constitutional freedoms is becoming a bipartisan issue. Call Congress and tell them to pass these two key pieces of legislation.

Health Officials Worry About Tattoo Parties

EASTON Talbot County Public Schools parents recently received a news alert about a popular yet dangerous activity children have started attending throughout the country.
The new craze, tattoo parties, got the attention of the Talbot County Health Department, TCPS and the school system's health provider, Choptank Community Health Systems.
The parties are held in someone's home for a chance to get cheap tattoos, typically in a basement without parental knowledge, according to an alert sent to TCPS parents. The children are often unaware if the tattoo artist is licensed or professionally trained, increasing the chance for infections.

Record Numbers of Incarcerated Mothers Bad News For Women, Children, Communities

It is well known that the United States imprisons a higher percentage of its population than any other industrialized country. And while it is true that the prison population is predominantly male, the number of female prisoners has risen more than 800 percent in the last three decades, outpacing the approximate 400 percent increase in the male prison population during the same time period. And according to the Institute on Women and Criminal Justice report "Hard Hit: The Growth in the Imprisonment of Women, 1977-2004," in 1977, the United States imprisoned ten out of every 100,000 women, while in 2004 that number had increased to 64 out of 100,000. And because women tend to be caretakers, particularly of children, the effect their incarceration often has on families can be disastrous.

The Roots of Mass Incarceration

"The rise of what we now know as mass incarceration happened on the heels of the civil rights movement and the various liberation movements in the U.S.," says Vikki Law, author of "Resistance Behind Bars: the Struggles of Incarcerated Women." Lower-income communities began to be policed more heavily as a way to prevent people from getting organized, says Law. The war on drugs had kicked into gear by 1982, which "wasn't focused across the board on everybody," says Law. "There were specific images, like the black mother on crack and crack babies."

Because women tend to be nonviolent offenders, a large factor in the increase has been the popularity of mandatory minimum drug laws, which were seen as a tough-on-crime measure during the war on drugs.

Teacher Ratings Off The Table

Teachers statewide may let out a collective sigh of relief: a new rating system connected to teacher evaluations has been scrapped, for now.
Education officials will continue working on a rating system for teachers but for now are taking out the section relating to state test scores and teacher ratings, Department of Education Secretary Lillian Lowery told a joint committee hearing Jan. 11 at Legislative Hall.
