Speaking as a city taxpayer who did not vote for Ireton, please know that my wife and I are ashamed, embarrassed, and angry about our mayor's policies, tactics and behavior.
Having said that, if you can possibly ignore the mayor's silly grandstanding, we ARE double taxed for emergency services. We believe that a more equitable agreement should be ironed out.
Having said THAT, we also firmly believe that if any agreement is ironed out, we the city taxpayers will see no tax relief as a result. The mayor will give it away to some liberal scheme doomed to yet another failure.
Alas, such is life in the big city led by this fool.
Publishers Notes: There are services that the County and City provide that overlap each other. I had a wonderful conversation with Jake Day on this matter. His response was extremely professional. He said, Joe, we need to start by getting to the table and discussing this. He agrees with the Mayor that there is a service provided that seems unfair but that we should not put a gun to someone's head and demand anything without first sitting down at the table to see where everyone stands.
If the County can't afford it at this time, so be it. However, now that it's on their radar screen, perhaps a better partnership agreement can be made that suits the City and the County.
In speaking to Mr. Culver on this matter, he's open to all kinds of possibilities. However, what ALL of you need to understand is that Jim Ireton made NO attempt, (other then a demanding letter of threats) to sit down and discuss this matter.
Give it time Folks. My guess is that Culver and Day will iron this thing out, no doubt about it. However, I highly doubt anything will be completed under Ireton's watch.

The minute the City is brought to the table for the services the County is providing to the City, the whole game changes.
In the mean time, the LIBERAL media is shoving it down your throat in the attempt to make Culver look bad.
Don't pit the City against the County. At least Jake Day will deliver a level headed discussion and between Day and Culver the entire thing will get resolved.

How much does a city resident pay each year for taxes? Let's say they have a 100k house. How much are they paying to the city for the year.

How about county residents stop buying in the city.
this so called double taxation is bogus. If you live in the city you are also paying for police protection. You are also paying for street lights. You are also paying for sidewalks. Fire and ambulance service are a small part of the overall picture. Don't like it....move to the county.
Mayor also said he will take down blighted houses down by the end of his term. What a joke.

I still have a problem accepting this double taxation issue. Yes, it does exist, but why? Did the County force the City to implement these duplicated services or was this a choice by the City? If it was a choice, then man up and accept it. If the County forced it, then the County should pay up completely. Yes, the City provides service to the County areas....but so do Hebron, Delmar, Parsonsburg, Fruitland, Mardela, Sharptown, Pittsville, Willards, Powellville, etc, etc, etc. And in none of those areas is there a tax relief based on those services. I sat on a committee nearly 30 years ago that argued this same issue and the same threat was made by the then-Mayor of Salisbury and the surrounding fire depts agreed to do whatever necessary to cover these areas rather than being threatened with life & property dangers. Hopefully, this will "bury" Ireton once and for all.
So what happens if a fire is too large for just Salisbury to cover themselves and the call county departments to assist? This does happen, does it not? So he is going to nit pick this crap and risk the safety of the citizens of his city? I am glad for once I live in the county!! We are supposed to work together for the greater good, how about when the Sheriffs office backs up SPD etc...this backscratching goes on and on...no other mayor has ever made a scene over it not even Tilghman! Ireton sucks! Good Luck to the citizens of Salisbury!!

Solve this problem by doing away with city and town governments. One ruling government would be the county of Wicomico. This would save millons of dollars.
If the County gives Salisbury another dollar the residents in the County should boycott all business in Salisbury.
Salisbury university, the SCHOOLS, the civic center, the car dealerships-all are outside city limits so iteton wants to remove fire protection from the schools?
What people need to realize is that a tax set off which is what this is, is mandated only in certain counties in Maryland - Wicomico not being one of those. Although Wicomico, Worchester and Queen Anne's are the only counties in Maryland that do not provide municipalities with a tax set off. The city has tried to request this of the County going back at least as far as 2002 never with any success. If the City really wants to force this the they should investigate into changing the law. Google Maryland Tax Set Off FY2014 and you will see an annual report created by the state.
Perhaps Bob Culver can DO what Rick Pollitt promised and lied about.
There was a study that showed that Salisbury, Delmar & Fruitland did provide services at a savings to the county that the county ought to give relief to all of them for. Pollitt back-pedaled saying all the taxes went to the schools, so the county didn't need to pay up.

However, for those asking about the services the county provides the city, hello, the city taxpayers pay county taxes just like the non-city residents do, so they sure as heck should get some services from the county. The study took all that into consideration anyway.
Ireton is an ass in his dramatics, but while Pollitt was Executive, he barely said a peep. Those two women who used to be on the council and were the financial watchdogs were the ones calling this stuff out correctly.
Now that there is a Republican in that chair, Ireton is raising hell. I think Culver is a fair guy who will do what he can with the crap hand he's been dealt.
Ireton and Day are both hoping to score political points. They are heroes if they win, martyrs if they "tried" but the county does nothing. Day will at least be civil. Ireton will try to fry Culver at every turn because that's just the kind of guy he is.

Ok so has anyone taken into account that the county owns and maintains the dispatch center which is utilized by SFD? Pretty sure they also do all radio maintenance for SFD.
As a resident of Salisbury for as long as I have been alive yet never lived within "City Limits" This Mayor has to go! A policy of refusing Safety Services to County residents whom have paid their taxes in one of the Highest income taxed Counties in Maryland this is preposterous. Yet those very same County residents have absolutely no say when it comes voting for the Mayor of the town where most of that very same income tax revenue goes. This governmental model is obsurd! If this policy does indeed go into effect I propose that first the Mayor be held directly responsable for any loss of live, liberty or property incurred by such an outlandish policy.
The biggest problem here is and no one is even picking up on it. Jim Ireton is to stupid to know what is going on in his departments so he is tooting the horn of this mastermind.
That mastermind I am speaking of is Rick Hoppes. All of this comes from the inside and Rick Hoppes and John Tull are the real masterminds of this plan and they both need to be fired over this.
Jake Day are you paying attention?? Those two will be your problem and you need to fix that cancer before you become part of the problem as the next mayor!!
